Position Description

The Bed Management Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and coordinating access to inpatient detoxification, residential treatment, and recovery housing for individuals impacted by opioid use disorder (OUD). This position ensures that clients receive timely placement into appropriate treatment or recovery facilities by maintaining a current database of available beds, managing referrals, and collaborating with treatment providers and community partners. The role is vital in facilitating seamless transitions of care for individuals in need of immediate and long-term services.

Typical Duties

  • Bed Availability Monitoring:

  • Maintain an up-to-date database of available inpatient detoxification, residential treatment, and recovery housing beds across the region.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with treatment facilities, shelters, and recovery homes to ensure ongoing communication regarding bed availability.

  • Client Placement Coordination:

  • Manage incoming referrals for individuals seeking inpatient or residential treatment services for opioid use disorder.

  • Screen clients to ensure they meet criteria for placement, coordinating with clinical staff and referral sources to ensure appropriate care settings.

  • Work with clients, families, and care teams to facilitate placement in treatment programs, ensuring timely transitions.

  • Collaboration and Communication:

  • Serve as a liaison between treatment providers, recovery homes, case managers, and referral agencies.

  • Facilitate communication and coordination among providers to ensure continuity of care, including handoff and follow-up on placements.

  • Documentation and Reporting:

  • Accurately document all client interactions, bed placements, and provider communications in the designated system.

  • Generate regular reports on bed utilization, client placements, and waitlist times for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Resource Management:

  • Identify and address gaps in available beds by working with community partners and providers to expand treatment and recovery options.

  • Track and monitor service outcomes related to bed management, adjusting procedures to improve service delivery and access as needed.

  • Crisis Intervention and Support:

  • Work closely with crisis response teams and case managers to expedite placements for clients in urgent need of care.

  • Assist in coordinating alternative resources for clients when immediate bed availability is not possible.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would prepare the incumbent to perform the duties of the position at the appropriate level. Employees would typically have a bachelor’s degree and some experience in program management or development.

More specific education, experience or certification requirements may be included in the position announcement as vacancies occur.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, public health, psychology, or related field (master’s degree preferred)

  • Experience in healthcare coordination, case management, or related field, particularly in substance use disorder (SUD) or mental health services.

  • Experience working with individuals affected by substance use disorder or mental health crises.

  • Strong knowledge of the continuum o care for opioid use disorder, including detox, inpatient, residential, and recovery housing services.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.

  • Proficiency in database management and using tracking systems for bed availability and client placement.

  • Familiarity with local and state resources for opioid treatment and recovery support.

  • Understanding of trauma-informed care and the challenges faced by individuals seeking treatment for opioid use disorder.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage diverse community stakeholders and facilitate progress to complete tasks and achieve goals.
