Position Summary/Description:

The UNC -CH Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering and the Institute for Environmental Health Solutions ( IEHS ) wish to recruit a full-time, fixed-term Research Assistant Professor with expertise at the intersection of climate change and health. We welcome candidates that bring an interdisciplinary perspective, bridging environmental science, public health, epidemiology, and climate research. Through their work with IEHS , a successful candidate will enrich our understanding of the complex interactions between environmental factors, human health, and climate dynamics and would help address urgent issues. The health impacts of climate change are among the most pressing public health issues in the coming decades. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and shifts in disease patterns pose significant risks to populations worldwide. As research faculty, the ideal candidate will engage in cutting-edge research, investigating topics such as heat-related illness by exploring the health consequences of extreme heat events. They will also address the mental health issues or psychological effects of climate-related stressors (e.g., natural disasters, displacement). This climate change and health faculty member will enhance both undergraduate and graduate education, developing courses on climate-health interactions, mentoring students, and inspiring the next generation of environmental health professionals. As climate change disproportionately affects vulnerable communities, a faculty member with expertise in this area will emphasize equity and environmental justice and could examine how climate-related health disparities intersect with social determinants and advocate for policies that promote fairness and resilience. Priority will be given to candidates who demonstrate the potential to invigorate our department, fostering innovation, collaboration, and impactful research in the face of our changing planet. The selected faculty member will be expected to mentor students, guide postdoctoral research associates, conduct research, develop new research directions, teach ENVR 400, and foster collaborations within the Department and with other units across the University.
