General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate technical and administrative work supervising the servicing, maintenance and repair of automotive equipment at the City's equipment repair shop; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Public Works. Supervision is exercised over division personnel.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
Overseeing the inspection, maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks and equipment; maintaining parts inventory; determining maintenance and repair needs; maintaining records and files; preparing reports. - Plans, schedules and supervises the work of mechanics engaged in the repair and maintenance of the City's automotive equipment and parts and supplies inventory.
- Diagnoses problems, writes repair orders and supervises and inspects the repair; provides technical advice and assistance on difficult jobs to mechanics.
- Evaluates municipal fleet requirements, recommends purchase of new automotive equipment and of shop equipment and supplies and prepares and review specifications for recommended purchases.
- Manages and oversees work performed by outside contractors and vendors.
- Oversees the preparation of paperwork and invoices; reviews and approves invoices submitted by vendors and contractors.
- Enters a variety of information into the computer.
- Verifies and maintains file of completed with orders; verifies gas/fuel load and reports; monitors fuel prices.
- Inspects vehicles and equipment prior to auctions.
- Prepares regular and special reports; prepares and submits division budget; oversees expenditures.
- Trains technical and service staff; arranges training sessions; conducts safety training and related meetings; evaluates work performance of employees; maintains timesheet records.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of automotive repair shop management; thorough knowledge of the characteristics and maintenance needs of a wide variety of automotive and mechanical equipment; thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of automotive maintenance shop operations; thorough knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines and/or of their repair and maintenance characteristics; ability to plan and supervise the work of automotive mechanics; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors, contractors and associates.
Requirements
Education and Experience Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or vocational school supplemented by course work in heavy and light equipment maintenance and extensive experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and/or construction equipment including considerable supervisory experience.
Special Requirements Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. CDL may be required.
