The Hospital of Central Connecticut (THOCC) is a 414-bed, 32-bassinet, acute-care community teaching hospital and Level-III Trauma Center with campuses in New Britain and Southington. The hospital was created with the 2006 merger of the former New Britain General and Bradley Memorial hospitals. Affiliated with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, The Hospital of Central Connecticut provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services in general medicine and surgery and a wide variety of specialties. Position Summary: The Director of Nursing will be responsible for the day-to-day/24 hour oversight of the Inpatient Units at The Hospital of Central Connecticut. This role has primary responsibility for operational and performance standards, nursing practice standards, fiscal management and clinical practice for patient care and service delivery. The Director will collaborate with physician leaders, the management team and relevant clinical and administrative leaders to ensure that the highest level of quality patient care is delivered. Working closely with the Vice President of Patient Care Services, the Director will improve operating results across the service line by creating an integrated service line business plan and operational metrics that align with the achievement of key hospital strategic objectives. Key Accountabilities: * Ensures quality patient care by setting standards for nursing/patient care that are based on the Inpatient Surgery specialty and are evidence-based, and holding managers and staff accountable for meeting the standards. Provides strategic oversight and management of assigned areas by providing direction to managers and supervisors to evaluate their managerial effectiveness for their assigned areas. This includes but not limited to job evaluations, work performance, staffing assessments and disciplinary actions. Provides developmental opportunities for employees through a comprehensive orientation program and ongoing education opportunities * Ensures the alignment of daily operations, delivery of services, staffing and department needs with operational requirements and development goals. Directs all process and productivity improvements for assigned services which can include facility related renovations and/or construction. * Creates, presents and integrates service line business and operational plans/metrics which align with the achievement of key hospital strategic objectives * Participates in the preparation of operating and capital budgets in collaboration with the department leaders; forecasts demand for services and conducts trending analysis. Monitors overall performance of the department against a pre-defined set of outcomes measures of performance standards- financial, clinical quality and service, and implement programs to close any gap in performance * Develop (and update) clinical plans addressing: quality improvement, marketing/market share analysis, capital equipment planning; technology assessment plan, revenue issues (payer, capitation), and human resource needs * Monitors day-to-day operational activity, providing direction and guidance on workplace matters and direct intervention in emergent situations * Directs activities related to continuous improvement and performance outcomes * Develops measures of quality and implements continuous quality improvement processes to achieve benchmark quality outcomes * Identifies key customer and employee safety risks, and implements processes, educational/training interventions, policies/procedures, and monitors to mitigate risk of potential harm * Demonstrates excellent clinical skills, promotes interdepartmental relationships, models professional behavior uses effective communication strategies, acts as a role model for staff and contributes to meeting the mission and goals of Hartford HealthCare and HOCC * Prioritize the Lean operating principles within a work group. Lead teams toward prioritizing the right work resulting in the highest quality care for the patient population, continuous improvement and alignment with HHC operational goals * Serve as an educator and mentor to the staff; someone who drives clinical performance, evidence-based practices, and compassionate patient care. Conduct rounds to assess appropriate patient assignments, evaluate patient care and patient/family satisfaction * Bachelor's Degree in related field and Master's Degree is required. One degree must be in nursing * Current license in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut * Five plus years of progressive leadership experience in an acute care setting * Experience in direct operational issues in a 24/7 clinical environment * Highly effective analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills * Strong communications skills required - both written and verbal * Visible leader with excellent interpersonal communication skills who relates well with all levels of the organization * A creative, forward thinking leader with the proven ability to engage, coach and mentor direct reports, colleagues and other key stakeholders * A demonstrated track record designing strategies and delivering solutions in areas including, but not limited to, patient experience, patient safety, employee engagement and workflow redesign * Knowledge of clinical information systems preferred We take great care of careers.
