Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Executive Director, Research Training and Development within the Biomedical and Health Sciences (BHS) unit at the School of Graduate Studies (SGS).Under direction of the Vice Dean of the School of Graduate Studies (SGS)/ Dean of the SGS- Biomedical and Health Sciences (SGS-BHS) unit, the Executive Director, Research Training and Development will support a multi- dimensional research training strategy that expands the capacity and preparedness of SGS-BHS and RBHS' to develop and support group and interdisciplinary training teams, catalyzes new collaborations, unifies currently disparate education and training collaborations, increases the competitiveness of extramural training proposals, implements individual and programmatic trainee support opportunities, tracks and helps in implementation of SGS-BHS strategic goals and identifies and tracks metrics for success.Among the key duties for this position are the following:
  • Directs the SGS-BHS Training Grant Support Office (TGSO). Training grants provide infrastructure and financial support for innovation in research training for high school students through early-stage faculty scientists. The TGSO was established by SGS-BHS (the RH component of the School of Graduate Studies) in 2021to provide dedicated strategic, administrative and operational advice to RH-based faculty engaged in training grant proposal development. This support has recently been offered to faculty based in RU-NB as well. The ED directs TGSO office staff to assure maintenance and enhancement of the infrastructure needed to support the development of high-quality competitive training grant proposals, including training tools and modules that reflect best-in-class approaches and gathering, synthesizing and maintaining adequate data and related resources that inform individual researchers, departments, groups, and schools in matters related to sponsored research training activities and productivity.
  • Implements the strategic goals of SGS-BHS. SGS-BHS is the responsibility center that houses the Ph.D. and research M.S. programs of Rutgers Health, and includes faculty, staff and 1000 students on three campuses - Newark, New Brunswick and Piscataway. Each year the SGS-BHS 5-person leadership, which includes the ED, develops educational goals for the following year (s). The ED is responsible for managing the implementation of these goals, which includes strategizing pathways to successful outcomes, interacting as needed with leadership, faculty and staff from SGS-BHS, SGS and Rutgers Health host schools (NJMS, RWJMS, RSDM, EMSOP, SPH, SON) as well as central administration offices.
  • Responsible for the implementation of online programming for SGS-BHS-based programs. SGS-BHS has recruited two instructional designers to develop fully online versions of in-person Masters programs that currently exist on the SGS-BHS campuses. The ED will be responsible for working with the faculty advisors and instructional designers to coordinate the development and implementation of these programs.
  • Oversees CTSA-based training grant program. The Rutgers-based CTSA program (NJACTS) was recently awarded a $49M grant to continue its mission of developing and expanding NJ-based research and training in translational science. One component of this mission is the training and development of graduate students and postdocs in the field of translational science. The director of this effort, a collaboration that includes our university partners Princeton and NJIT, is the SGS-BHS dean and ED supervisor. The ED will be responsible for overseeing the personnel responsible for implementing the day-to-day activities of the program, including activity development, outcomes tracking, data maintenance, etc. across all three universities.
  • Responsible for hiring/firing/performance reviews of the Research Training and Development team.

  • Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 or the applicable provisions of relevant collective negotiations agreements, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • An advanced degree in Biomedical/Health Science, Education or a relevant discipline is required, plus a minimum of 15 years of relevant management-level experience in higher education/research training administration.
