Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Research Associate I for the Child Health Institute of New Jersey at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.Under the direction of Dr. Qi Yang (Principal Investigator), the Research Associate I (RAI) will be responsible for the design, analysis, interpretation, and presentation in oral and written form, a project focused development and function of novel innate immune cells in vital tissues such as the lung and the brain. The goal of this project is to determine the immune and inflammatory mechanisms of asthma.The RAI will conduct highly specialized technical research requiring generation of mouse models of chronic asthma, measurement of airway resistance using Flexivent instrument with non-survival surgical procedures, legendplex assays, fluorescence activated cell sorting, magnetic activated cell sorting, multiple color microscope with Z-stacking, spatial transcriptome library generation and bioinformatics analysis, and scRNA-seq library generation and bioinformatics analysis. The project requires an expert with specialized molecular and cellular biology and animal physiology experience, as well as sophisticated bioinformatic skills, to generate spatial transcriptome and scRNA-seq libraries and perform extensive bioinformatic analysis, to generate mouse models of chronic asthma and to measure airway resistance using the Flexivent instrument with non-survival surgical procedures.The RAI is expected to maintain a high level of research competency, knowledge, and skills to perform duties assigned by the PI. In addition, the RAI is expected to have excellent writing skills to prepare manuscripts based on their research, develop, and maintain standard operating procedures for the facility, and aid in developing the PI's grant applications. The RAI will participate in lab meetings, research in progress seminars, present at conferences, as well as manage day-to-day operations of the lab, including the training of new personnel and the direct oversight of student trainees. A career development plan will be outlined with the PI and multiple resources to aid with these requirements will be provided by the PI.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Perform specific laboratory techniques involve flow cytometry analysis, animal models of airway and brain disorders, singlecell RNA-seq, multiplex cytokine assays, and immunofluorescence imaging.
  • Generate spatial transcriptome libraries and performing bioinformatics for spatial deconvolution analysis.
  • Generate single-cell RNA-seq libraries and performing bioinformatics for single cell gene expression profiling.
  • Perform non-survival surgical procedures to measure airway resistance using FlexiVent instrument.
  • Generate mouse models of chronic asthma.
  • Perform LegendPlex assays.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Qualified candidate must hold a PhD, DVM or equivalent degree in a relevant biological science field, plus two (2) years of related research experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must have written and published scientific articles.
  • Must have experience with and working knowledge of spatial transcriptome and scRNA-seq library generation and related bioinformatics skills, mouse models of chronic asthma, and FlexiVent analysis.
  • Must have a high level of research competency, knowledge, and skills to perform duties assigned by the PI.
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills, as demonstrated by authorship of scientific publications (first authorship preferred), and ability to understand and communicate in English to sufficiently perform the job duties.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Applicant should be highly motivated, have excellent organizational skills, and be able to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Must be able to assist in daily lab management, including training and direct oversight of personnel and student aids.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent writing skills with experience in writing grants, fellowships, manuscripts, or scientific reports.
