Leviton Senior Materials Development Engineer in New Holland, Pennsylvania

About the role The Senior Materials Development Engineer fulfills a key technical leadership role in the management and execution of material related research and development projects by championing efforts to develop and improve cable materials, material characterization processes, material test and measurement methodologies, and material specifications. Responsibilities Lead material development projects for new and/or improved material formulations. Lead and/or participate in copper cable development projects as a Materials Engineer. Develop new or alternative materials suitable for use in cables produced at our manufacturing sites globally. Evaluate commercially available materials for use in our global product portfolio. Coordinate and witness external fire test activities, analyze and trend relevant test data and understand related fire legislation. Support the needs of internal and external customers for materials compliances, third party testing, certifications, and listings, material characterizations, and material mechanical properties. Support Supply Chain by identifying and delivering material cost savings opportunities. Reduce supply chain risk by providing supplier competition, resolving obsolete materials, and mitigating price increases. Oversee the Materials Lab including equipment maintenance and calibration, standard operating procedures, and safety compliance as assigned or directed. Conduct industry studies and competitive analyses within the industry to ensure Leviton Network Solutions remains at competitive level in the cable industry as assigned or directed. Establish and maintain supplier relationships. Keep up to date on the material industry and available products. Research new and novel materials for future cable and connectivity applications. Assist in carbon footprint calculations, lifecycle assessments, and sustainability projects. Provide technical support to the Marketing, Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Quality Assurance departments. Prepare periodic project and activity reports indicating progress of projects relative to plan. Prepare and deliver presentations to management on projects and R&D efforts as assigned. Qualifications Strong knowledge of materials, including fundamental chemistry, analysis, processing, and performance as related to cable production. Expertise in material test and measurement methodologies. Experience with plastic extrusion processes, analysis tools, and process characterization using industry models or statistical methods. Expert understanding of relevant industry standards, test methods, and best practices, including fire tests. Expert understanding of the effect of material characteristics on a cable’s electrical, mechanical, and flame performance. Demonstrated technical leadership and ability to work in a cross-functional, multicultural team environment and ability to understand and apply technical concepts. Ability to utilize experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals with little reliance on direct supervision. Solid experience in statistical principles, product development processes, verification, and validation techniques. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Have a winning attitude, strong work ethic and willingness to work in a fast-paced environment.
