Dartmouth Health Paramedic in New London, New Hampshire

GENERAL SUMMARY
*
Responds to emergency medical calls that are within the immediate and mutual aid catchment areas, delivers safety and quality patient care in pre-hospital and hospital settings, and performs all procedures within the Scope of Practice for licensure and NH Regional Service.

FUNCTIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General Clinical
Provides patient and family centered care based on the physical ability, intellectual development, psychosocial, education, and safety needs of the neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient in both the pre-hospital and hospital settings.
Practices/provides all patient care within scope of practice, licensure, training, and New London Hospital protocols, at all times.
Communicates patient needs/assessment to the physician, registered nurse, and other service providers involved in the patient’s care.
Ensures sensitivity towards patients and caregiver/family by eliciting patient’s physical and emotional concerns, being a receptive listener and providing an environment conducive to interviewing and delivery of care.

Ambulance Duties
Provides care to a variety of patients within the response and mutual aid area as a Nationally Registered Paramedic
Delivers professional care as directed by NLH Ambulance policies and procedures, responding to calls in a manner that is effective, while keeping crew, public, patient, and equipment safety at the forefront.
Uses vehicle and equipment properly, following NH state motor vehicle law, and hospital policies and procedures.
Using correct radio procedures, performs proper professional communication with various regional dispatch and emergency services and New London Hospital Emergency Department.
Maintains required vehicle standards for safety patient transport by completing the checklist of equipment accurately, replacing necessary equipment after each transport. Reports any equipment or maintenance problems to the appropriate personnel. Completes vehicle and equipment inventory and restocks, as assigned. Maintains clean vehicle and equipment per the NH EMS protocols.
Ensures the EMS run report documentation forms are completed in a timely, legible, and accurate manner. Completes transfer, billing, truck inspection sheets and all required documents correctly, completely and in a timely manner. Ensures thorough, accurate documentation of relevant data.

Emergency Room Services
Works with registered nurses and/or physicians in the assessment, planning and implementation and evaluation of clinical care in the Emergency Department.
Triages patients presenting to the Emergency Department, according to patient presentation, for appropriate care and prioritization.
Provides patient care at the level of Registered Paramedic to include advanced airway management (such as endotracheal intubation), EKG interpretation, medication administration, intravenous/intraosseous access, blood sample collection and additional skills according to defined in-hospital enhanced skill set.
Assists the physician with procedures, including but not limited to, setting up sterile fields, chest tube insertion, pelvic exam, wound care, dressing application, and splint application.
Other duties may be assigned after appropriate education and documentation has been provided.

Hospital-Wide Services
Responds to in-house emergencies as part of a rapid response team. Provides advanced airway management, cardiac resuscitation management as team leader in accordance with ACLS and PALS certification.
Responds to all areas of hospital for critical care evaluation and disposition determination. Works with hospital providers to ensure emergency care continuity and management with the emergency department.
Responds to all areas of hospital for behavioral emergency management, utilizing skills ranging from verbal communication to manage violent or aggressive behavior to chemical sedation according to the situation.
Provides strategic staffing assistance in times of either acute patient management requirements or transitional clinical staff augmentation.
Serves as expert resource for the establishment of intravenous access for patients identified to have difficult access.
