New employees will begin at 90% of starting rate for first six months. Pay rate increases incrementally according to the union contract. Wages for new employees will be on tiered scale based on the candidates skills and experience as approved by management staff at the time of hire.

The Regional Transit Authority gets people moving around New Orleans. Our transit services bring hard-working commuters to their jobs, students to their schools and fun seekers to entertainment, shopping areas and restaurants. We provide mobility to residents of the city as well as tourists, taking them to and from their hotels to historical neighborhoods and countless attractions. RTAs system includes 5 streetcar lines, 30 bus routes, 2 ferry routes and paratransit services. Our passengers take more than 19 million rides every year.

TITLES OF POSTIONS REPORTING DIRECTLY TO THIS JOB None

JOB SUMMARY The Apprentice Technician, under supervision, will perform troubleshooting, preventative and corrective maintenance, along with assistance from Bus, Paratransit, and Rail employees, supervisors and lead technicians. The Apprentice Technician will be responsible for assuring that all equipment is working and aligned properly to prevent damage to systems, bus, paratransit, and rail vehicles. In some situations, the Apprentice Technician will provide emergency response and will be called upon with the Electrician to provide support for other areas in regards to light rail service, special events, streetcar, and public safety and service. Sets up and operates lathe, milling machine, drill press, surface grinder and related standard machine shop equipment.

  • Establishes operational sequences required for matching parts where no standard procedure exists.
  • Determines proper speeds, feeds, and cutting tools required for the machining of a wide variety of metals or synthetic metals.
  • Reads and interprets complex manufacturing and assembly blue prints.
  • Works to critical tolerances established by manufacturer or engineering.
  • Removes broken bolts and/or studs as required.
  • Uses a wide variety of precision measuring and calibration instruments.
  • Uses a wide variety of precision measuring devices and lay?out equipment, to transfer manufacturing tolerances required for the machining of replacement parts.
  • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of RTA are carried out.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Sharpens and/or replaces cutting tools as required.
  • Maintains a clean and safe workplace.
  • Performs other job-related duties in keeping with the goals and objectives of RTA.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • A High School diploma or Equivalent.
  • Must be able to work in the safety critical environments associated with operation of a rail system.
  • Must successfully complete all required training and maintain needed qualifications and employee requirements.

EXPERIENCE A minimum of two (2) years recent paid experience working as a machinist in an established machine shop or one (1) year with the satisfactory completion of an applicable training program is preferred.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS/DEMANDS Must possess a valid Louisiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A-P.

Must submit to criminal background check, the results of which must meet hiring criteria for the role.


WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to work outdoors and indoors under varying weather conditions. Job requires stooping, bending, climbing, kneeling, walking throughout the shift and at times the handling of parts ranging from 10 to 50 pounds or more.
  • Must be able to work in all required Personal Protective Equipment and Safety Gear (P.P.E)

This is a designated Safety Sensitive Position Covered under USDOT(Federal Transit Administration [FTA] Regulations). Drug and Alcohol Testing is conducted using FTA regulations.

  • Must be able to operate lathes, milling machines, drill presses and other related standard machine shop equipment.
  • Must be able to read and be capable of writing legibly for required reports, forms, and other documentation.
  • Must have a working knowledge of metallurgy, required for establishing micro-finish tolerances or assembly fitting.
