CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The Graduate Center is the focal point for advanced teaching and research at The City University of New York (CUNY), the nation's largest urban public university. With over 35 doctoral and master's programs of the highest caliber, the Graduate Center fosters pioneering research and scholarship in the arts and sciences and prepares students for careers in universities and the private, nonprofit, and government sectors. The Graduate Center's commitment to research and scholarship for the public good is exemplified by its more than 30 centers, institutes, and initiatives, including its Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), a 200,000 square-foot facility in upper Manhattan, designed to promote collaboration among scientists in five areas of global research and innovation: nanoscience, photonics, structural biology, neuroscience, and environmental sciences.
The ASRC is seeking an accomplished, motivated, and innovative individual to serve as a Research Associate and Assistant Director of the Advanced Laboratory for Chemical and Isotopic Signatures (ALCIS), a core facility within the Environmental Sciences Initiative (ESI). The incumbent will report directly to the ASRC’s Director of Operations and Deputy Executive Director, Brian Giebel, who additionally serves as the Director of ALCIS (with a dotted line to the ESI Director, Charles Vorosmarty). This position is appointed for one year, with potential for annual renewals.
ALCIS within the ESI operates as a service center and strives to build multidisciplinary and collaborative relationships that share common interests and motivation to unravel human imprints within the natural world and engineered environments, to safeguard earth resources, and protect human health. In service and research, the laboratory supports projects in the related areas of environmental chemistry, geochemistry, paleoceanography, soil science, and ecology.
The laboratory provides high precision measurements of light stable isotope arrangements (D/H, 13C/12C, 15N/14N, 18O/16O) for hydrocarbons, greenhouse gases, carbonates, and other samples using a Thermo Scientific MAT-253 Plus and Delta V Plus isotope ratio mass spectrometer with a high temperature conversion elemental analyzer, gas bench, PreCon, Kiel Device, and GC-ISOLINK peripherals.
Supporting instrumentation includes a Shimadzu GCMS for solvent injections (i.e., phospholipid fatty acids and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), a Shimadzu Py-GCMS (for analyses of soil organic carbon, microplastics and other materials), and a Shimadzu AirSight (combined FTIR/Raman microscope) for spectral characterization of plastics, soil minerals, and biomolecules. Sample preparations are achieved with a Thermo Scientific Dionex Accelerated Solvent Extractor (ASE) 350, Labconco RapidVap, and/or a New Wave Research high resolution micromill/drill. Ancillary lab equipment includes Sartorius and Mettler ultra/micro/analytical balances, Elga water purification system, and numerous cold storage units.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Responsible for operational management of the laboratory and leading special projects. The candidate will assist the laboratory’s director with setting and executing research and administrative objectives that promote sustainable and financially sound laboratory operations.
The duties will be split 80:20 between lab management and research activity, respectively.
Oversee and execute advanced method development, consult with laboratory users, and oversee day-to-day laboratory operations in addition to the maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and calibration of analytical instrumentation.
Perform basic laboratory procedures including preparation and analysis of samples, reagents and calibration solutions/standards.
Provide general lab support including washing glassware, cleaning workstations, and waste disposal.
Training and assisting staff and other users in the use of available techniques and equipment.
Tracking sample status (i.e., receiving, analyzing, and disposal of samples) and reporting data to users.
Invoicing users for instrument use, sample analysis, and other lab usage.
Inventory management of laboratory resources and procurement of supplies from vendors.
Data manipulation using databases, spreadsheets, statistical tools, and other data programs
Compile, verify and validate accurate data records as well as maintaining and backing up lab data and lab computers.
Follow existing and/or produce quality control, standard operating procedures, and safety protocols.
Synthesize and distill laboratory and research data into reports, publications, and proposals.
This position requires the incumbent to work in person.
