Position Objective:

This position directs and manages activities and assignments of the Technical Support Group personnel in the performance of technical field support activities associated with increasing the levels of reliability, availability, customer service quality, over-the-rails, and on-time performance of all rolling stock fleets. The position will coordinate technical support’s involvement in various activities originating in the Operating Division and include all Transportation Departments. The position will ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations as well as adherence to Metro-North Railroad Safety requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing the activities and assignments of technical support personnel in support of all rolling stock maintenance activities. These activities include incident investigation, root cause troubleshooting, failure analysis , and shop floor workforce development to meet Metro-North’s equipment reliability and availability goals. Manage all activities of assigned HVAC Group personnel including scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of rolling stock HVAC equipment.

  • Manage the department’s activities associated with fleet health monitoring and real-time technical support for mechanical train incidents to limit operational risk. Utilize WMDS, RTDM, etc. to determine cause and proactively identify failure trends. Identify resolution, communicate findings, and coordinate equipment disposition with FMO and Line management.

  • Manage field engineering activities associated with system-specific equipment/component failure investigations, failure trend analysis, root cause analysis, and condition-based monitoring (CBM) . Coordinate test train activity and related equipment movement with FMO and Line Management. These activities support reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) initiatives and Equipment Engineering investigations.

  • Perform all necessary administrative tasks including employee scheduling, payroll, attendance , and discipline per Metro-North’s policies. Provide direction for improving the technical and management skills of Technical Support through examples of formal training , and assigned projects as well as ensuring their assigned duties are performed safely and effectively.

    Required Qualifications:

    Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • In-depth Knowledge of railroad-related Maintenance of Equipment operations.

  • Knowledge of railcar reliability, performance, trend development analysis , and troubleshooting of systems and equipment.

  • Knowledge of Engineering principles as applied to equipment designs.

  • Knowledge of inspection and maintenance of Electric and Diesel railcars .

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal , and leadership skills .

  • Strong organizational, project management , and inter-department management.

  • Familiarity with equipment Diagnostics software and Microsoft Office Suite computer programs and/or comparable applications.

  • General knowledge of FRA and other safety rules and regulations related to rolling stock.

  • Valid Driver’s license.

    Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related discipline. Demonstrated equivalent experience, education , and/or technical credentials may be considered.

  • Five (5) years of managing a support staff.

  • Minimum seven (7) years’ experience in the servicing and maintenance of electric and diesel railcar systems including HVAC.

    This position is safety-sensitive and subject to toxicological testing.

    Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MNR drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.
