About the Internal Audit Group at American Express

Our Internal Audit Group is a worldwide function with 300 team members and offices across nine countries within American Express. Our mission is to protect and enhance organizational value by providing independent, objective, risk-based assurance, advisory services and to influence the way the company manages risk.

We are committed to growing our audit staff significantly as we continue to expand and enhance the Internal Audit Group. Our assurance and risk professionals have diverse backgrounds including internal controls, consumer compliance, technology, operational risk, financial accounting, data analytics, and banking operations. Our audit teams align to key risk areas and business units to ensure IAG can provide comprehensive and risk-based audit coverage. In addition, IAG has a Professional Practices group responsible for managing audit operations, quality, and standards; regulatory relations; reporting; training and professional development; and key internal capabilities and technologies.

We are seeking a Sr. Manager for Artificial Intelligence/Generative AI Audit who is passionate about the evolving space Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI, and is capable to conduct impactful audits to ensure effective risk management across American Express. In this role, you will be a key member of the Internal Audit Group’s Data Science and Model Risk group wherein you will be conducting AI/Generative AI specific audits and coaching junior members of the team in doing so. This role is of an elevated importance to American Express in order to ensure its sustainable and responsible growth in the field of AI.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in specialized (“core”) audits focused on AI/Gen AI to assess the Company’s AI/Gen AI governance, risk management framework and supporting control processes. This involves assessing the governance, risk management and controls that support the ideation, development, deployment and monitoring of AI/ Gen AI use cases.

  • Effectively challenge the 1 st line AI/ Gen AI use case developers and 2 nd line risk management teams to ensure that the appropriate AI/ Gen AI risks are identified, mitigated, and governed.

  • Collaborate with other internal audit teams to effectively assess AI/Gen AI controls across information security, information technology, data security and privacy, third-party compliance and so on.

  • Present audit objectives, scope, and results to senior management, clearly articulating the potential impact of control gaps in a highly professional and proficient manner.

  • Evaluate results, synthesize audit findings across the project, draft audit reports and ensure effective and efficient execution of audits in conformance with professional and department standards.

  • Assist team leaders, senior auditors, and staff auditors in accomplishing team objectives and producing results.

  • Effectively coach, teach, mentor and develop junior colleagues and co-sourced resources in geographically diverse locations across all aspects of their role, the audit and analytic lifecycle, and audit methodology

  • Maintain internal audit competency through ongoing professional development; and keep abreast of the latest developments in AI/Gen AI technologies, ethical considerations, and regulatory requirements, and update the audit coverage strategy accordingly.

Who You Are

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Relevant work experience in risk management of AI/ML systems/ models within Financial, Banking or Consulting Industry.

  • Knowledge of global regulatory guidelines pertaining to AI and familiarity with internal audit practices.

  • Ability to break down a complex problem into components, solve them using data analysis, process knowledge and risk/control knowledge, and communicate results and control recommendations with transparency and integrity.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills that deliver quality, actionable and beneficial feedback to management on potential control issues and solutions to close gaps.

  • Capable of effectively working independently, within a team and across teams in a fast-paced environment to drive business results, utilizing related project management skills, employing creative thinking, and the ability to work on competing priorities.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Minimum a master’s degree) in Statistics/Computer Science/ Mathematics/Engineering.

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in risk management of AI/ML systems/ models within Financial, Banking or Consulting Industry.

  • Experience with Generative AI/ Large Language Models; preferred but not mandatory.

  • Experience with model risk management and/or technology related controls; preferred but not mandatory

Qualifications

Salary Range: $90,000.00 to $165,000.00 annually bonus benefits
