ITHAKA's mission is to expand access to knowledge and education around the world. Our services - Artstor, JSTOR, Portico, and Ithaka S R - enable people everywhere to learn, to grow, and to overcome historical barriers to education. In carrying out our mission, as employees we feel a deep responsibility to each other and our well-being, and are committed to building and sustaining a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace.

The Role

Reveal Digital is part of ITHAKA, furthering the mission of enhancing access to knowledge and education for people around the world through a library crowd-publishing model that creates diverse thematic collections of scholarly value. These collections amplify underrepresented 20th-century voices of dissent. Our goal is to foster scholarship and education by making these primary sources widely available through open access models.

ITHAKA is offering a limited, fixed-term Collection Development Specialist position through December 31, 2024. In this role, you will work for a total of 24 hours a week with Reveal Digital's team on our " Black Periodicals " collection, part of our Diversity & Dissent fund, which aims to document the political, literary, and cultural efforts of Black Americans and the global Black freedom struggle from the early 20th century through the Black Power movement.

To support this vital collection you will source content, engage with institutions and individuals to acquire materials, contribute to metadata creation efforts, and coordinate permissions in partnership with the Rights and Permissions Specialist. The ideal candidate will possess strong research and organizational skills and will have an interest in preserving and amplifying underrepresented voices. Evidence of effective communication skills, a keen interest in dynamic teamwork, and an aptitude for creative problem-solving are also essential. Bonus points for experience working within cultural heritage and/or arts sectors.
Responsibilities

  • Source Content: Identify and secure periodicals from libraries, archives, and private collections that align with the "Black Periodicals" collection's scope and objectives.
  • Engage with Institutions and Individuals: Communicate with institutions and individuals to arrange for the digitization and inclusion of their materials in the collection.
  • Metadata Contribution: Contribute to the creation of basic metadata and consult on developing descriptive text for the materials that will be published on JSTOR.
  • Project Tracking: Maintain and update an Airtable base, ensuring accurate tracking of project progress and maintaining an up-to-date dashboard.
  • Coordinate Permissions: Work with the Rights and Permissions Specialist to seek permissions from rights holders for the digitization and publication of materials.
  • Internal Communication: Attend meetings to report on the status of projects, communicate effectively within Reveal Digital, and coordinate with the Content Management team.
  • Quality Control: Ensure the accuracy and completeness of the digital collections through quality control processes.
  • Outreach and Engagement: Assist in outreach efforts to promote the collection, including by contributing to social media and other communication channels.
Experience and Skills
  • Experience, including coursework and/or internships, in archival research, collection development, or related fields.
  • Strong organizational, project management, documentation, and tracking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Basic familiarity with metadata standards and digital collection practices.
