IC3 is an initiative of faculty members at Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University, Cornell Tech, EPFL, ETH Zurich, University of Bern, UC Berkeley, University College London, UIUC, SMU, and the Technion. It's based at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute at Cornell Tech in NYC.

C3 uniquely meets the blockchain community's urgent need for world-class expertise in computer science that spans cryptography, distributed systems, programming languages, game theory, and system security techniques. IC3 applies this depth of expertise to deliver value on the two nested levels of science and code: Blockchain Science and Blockchain Code.

Position Summary

This is a benefit-eligible position for a fixed-term of 3 years, with possibility of extension. This position is located at Cornell Tech in New York City. This position can be performed partially remotely, with an expected work arrangement of approximately 3 days on campus / 2 days remote work.

Essential Functions Include

The data scientist will serve in a staff position within the Initiative for CryptoCurrencies and Contracts (IC3). Responsibilities will include:

• Work with various research groups in ic3 to understand and help advance their projects
• Organize, analyzing, and interpreting blockchain and blockchain-relevant data
• Devise and implement ways to present research results both within the research community and to the broader blockchain community
• Devise and implementing systems for data preservation
• Engage in community outreach through presentations and preparation of educational materials
• Work with on- and off-chain data to contribute to research projects on blockchain systems.
• Identify and mine reliable internal and external data sources.
• Design custom tools to optimize data mining, cleaning, validation, and analysis tasks.
• Develop and apply custom data models and algorithms to data sets.
• Develop tools and testing models to ensure data accuracy.
• Create and present reports that detail your findings, recommendations, and solutions.
• Use deep learning and pattern recognition to automate problem-solving techniques.
• Deploy data tools such as Python, R, SAS, or SQL in data analysis.
• Create algorithms and data models to forecast outcomes.

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree in computer science, data analytics, or a related discipline, and up to 2 years' relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Industry experience with blockchain technology, familiarity with smart contracts, and experience working with an academic research group are position requirements.
• Knowledge of and experience working with data from Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs)
• Experience using Tableau
• Experience using Python, R, SQL and possibly C, C++, Java, and/or JavaScript
• Experience using platforms such as MapReduce, Hadoop, Hive, MySQL
• Experience with business intelligence and data analytics tools
• Experience with blockchain data analysis from on and off-chain sources
• Proficiency with technical writing and public speaking
• Familiarity with machine learning techniques and when they should be used
• Familiarity with statistical and data mining techniques and when it is appropriate to use them
• Strong problem-solving skills
• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
• Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

• Basic knowledge of the workings of DAOs is preferred.
• Advanced degree in data science or related field
