The Mount Sinai Health System Nurse Manager, RN - Wound Care - Mount Sinai Morningside - Full Time in New York, New York
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Nurse Manager is responsible for managing the nursing practice and operations on a designated unit/service and ensuring the delivery of comprehensive health care following the philosophy, standards of practice, objectives, and policies of the Department of Nursing and the MSHS. The Nurse Manager is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of common problems related to the treatment, management, and rehabilitation of patients with pressure injuries, ostomies, wounds, and continence problems as well as patient education and competency assessment, counseling, and education of nursing staff.
This includes, but is not limited to, the management of clinical nursing practice, staff recruitment, retention, labor relations, supply chain and budget, staffing, employee performance evaluation, quality improvement, staff education, medical records, and internal and external regulatory and survey requirements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical/Technical/Service
Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical/technical/service/administrative tasks:
Develop, revise, and evaluate standards of care
Assist in the selection of supplies, technology, and equipment
Assure appropriate rental product utility while maintaining optimal patient safety and outcomes
Develop, provide, and evaluate staff education programs, ie. Orientation, in-services and continuing education
Health Assessment, Treatment, and Maintenance
Demonstrates a competent level of technical skill.
Conducts health assessment interviews focused on the wound, ostomy, continence-related care
Performs focused physical assessment.
Develops a plan of care based on the diagnosis and individual client needs.
Recommends medications and treatments as appropriate and works in partnership with medical staff to complete a medical order. Note: A credentialed NP in this role can act independently in writing medical orders..
Works collaboratively with the health care team and makes referrals to other disciplines as indicated.
Records, reports and interprets the patient's responses to the plan of care.
Teaches, counsels, and assists individuals and families to assume responsibility for the prevention of complications as they relate to patients with pressure injuries, ostomies, wounds, or continence problems
Provides individualized devices and treatments for hospital-acquired and community-acquired pressure injuries and wounds for in-hospital patients
Provides individualized fitting for appropriate medical equipment for in-hospital ostomy patients
Identifies available community resources helpful to clients, and refers and assists clients in utilizing such resources.
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned areas.
Organizational/Managerial
Demonstrates an awareness of the philosophy, standards, objectives and policies of the Patient Care Services Department and the Mount Sinai Health System.
Provides feedback of policies affecting practice is provided to Nursing Management and the Department of Medicine and Department of Surgery as appropriate.
Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
Participates in the department's quality improvement activities.
Participates in special projects and committees.
Participates in Nursing and Hospital/System committees.
Interviews and hires Per Diem WOCNs and participates/oversees in any disciplines if necessary of the wound care nursing team.
Performs Performance Appraisals accordingly.
Assesses staff nurses knowledge and skills related to wound care management
Participates in counseling and discipline of nursing staff in accordance with organizational standards.
Provides presentations and educational offerings.
Educational/Professional Development
Participates in inservices, orientation, and continuing education of staff.
Meets regulatory, licensure and annual health assessment requirements.
Participates in research.
Acts as a preceptor for selected students and staff.
Maintains collaborative practice agreement with physician as required by NYS law if in a Nurse Practitioner role.
Utilizes theories and principles of education to meet the learning needs of families, staff and self.
Avails self of educational opportunities to maintain/enhance competence and knowledge in advances of health care delivery.
Attends relevant workshops, conferences, and seminars.
Determines own professional needs through ongoing self-assessment, peer and care team feedback, and evaluation of role performance and assumes responsibility for meeting those needs.
Provides presentations and educational offerings.
Maintains Membership in professional and related organizations is encouraged.
Mentors and develops staff.
Serves as a role model and resource person for professional and paraprofessional staff.
Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community.
Practices as a member of the interdisciplinary care team via effective and respectful communication and collaboration.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor of Science with a major in nursing required
Master's Degree in Nursing required
Graduate of accredited Wound, Ostomy, Continence Educational Program or equivalent
Board Certified as a Wound, Ostomy, Continence Specialist or eligible and in process
Bi-lingual preferred
Licensed as a registered nurse with current registration in New York State
2 years minimum demonstrated clinical and administrative expertise in the area of nursing practice assigned
Basic Life Saver (BLS) Issuing Agency: AHA
Age of specific Competencies: Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric
