Description

Position Summary

The Staff Associate I in the Department of Neurological Surgery, Bruce' Lab will be assisting in experiments in the lab, and working on his own project in the lab. This will involve experiments on animals (so she will need ICM training) and data acquisition and analysis.

The Staff Associate will perform laboratory experiments to characterize the effects of local delivery of chemotherapy to treat brain tumors. These will include in vitro studies using cell lines, ex vivo studies using acute slice cultures generated from surgical samples, and in vivo studies using mouse models.

Duties

  • Mouse handling, breeding and survival surgery including stereotactic surgery - 40%
  • Cell culture - 10%
  • Microscopy - 10%
  • Maintenance of laboratory inventory and protocols - 30%
  • Presentation at laboratory meetings and scientific conferences - 5%
  • Publish scholarly reports - 5%

Functional Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the research subject and scientific methods of analysis.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in cell culture/aseptic technique, animal handling, animal surgery and laboratory management

Problem Solving

  • Excellent critical thinking, decision making and problem-solving skills are expected.
  • The candidate will be expected to have a high degree of initiative for problem-solving and the ability to establish new solutions related to the functioning of the lab.

Decision Making/Autonomy (Must equal 10)

Level of supervision required, on a scale of 1 (least) to 10 (most) - 3-7

Will meet with Dr. Bruce and Dr. Canoll once a weeks to discuss research progress. He will interact with other researchers in the lab on a daily basis

Degree of independent judgment expected, on a scale of 1 (least) to 10 (most) -3-7

In addition to helping others in their experiments, will be expected to conduct his own experiments and to present his results to the group.

Leadership

  • Good leadership skills will be important for carrying out collaborative research efforts.

Technical Expertise

  • Experience in most of the laboratory techniques that he will be performing
  • Cell culture
  • Animal handling and surgery
  • Laboratory management

Communication Skills

  • Excellent research and writing, communication presentation and organization skills required.
  • Shares information and confirmation of data.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in the Biological Sciences/neurosciences or a closely related field.
  • 4 years of experience preferred in a wet lab research environment
