Position Summary
The State Pre-College Enrichment Program (S-PREP) is a free high school and college preparation program for 7th -12th grade students who reside in New York City. The objective of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented students pursuing careers in healthcare or related STEM professions. The program offers academic enrichment courses that are designed to prepare students for success in math and science. The program also offers career development workshops, college advisement services, field trips and college tours
Tutor-Advisors for the S-PREP program will provide support for middle and high school students who are enrolled in math and science courses that are offered by the program. Tutor-Advisors will also conduct pre-college advisement sessions with students to gauge if they are on track to apply for college. Advisement sessions will help Program Administrators to better connect students to resources they may need. Participating students come from diverse backgrounds and generally have varying academic skill sets. Students typically request tutoring in the following subjects: Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Geometry, Physics, Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin, Alg2/Trig and Pre-Calculus. Ideal candidates would have experience tutoring students in math, science & the aforementioned languages.
Responsibilities
Tutors-Advisors report to the Program Administrators for the Office of Student Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Providing tutoring services for S-PREP students in small groups or 1:1 sessions
* Meeting with students to review homework assignments in respective math/science subject area(s)
* Meeting with students to review social-emotional assessment and provide feedback to program administrators on resources students may need.
* Identifying specific topics and/subject content that present challenges for students
* Assisting students with test preparation
* Providing feedback regarding students' performance for bi-annual evaluations
* Providing recommendations for program improvements
* Completing administrative/clerical duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma
Preferred Qualifications
Previous teaching experience
Other Requirements
- Applicants must be full time CUIMC students
- Education and training in science and/or mathematics
- Demonstration of leadership and organization skills
