Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of Recreation is seeking knowledgeable full-time Lifeguards to ensure a safe swimming environment for aquatic facility patrons at assigned swimming pools and open water facilities. Other duties may include instructing swimming lessons and water fitness classes; assisting with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of aquatic programs; planning daily activities of the pool and general swimming pool operations.

Department Starting Hourly Rate: $20.00

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Ensures the safety of swimmers and facility patrons by using American Red Cross Lifeguarding standards.

  • Promotes facility safety and enforces safety rules.

  • Ensures the safe use of the facility, beach or waterfront as well as site specific equipment.

  • Utilizes preventative Lifeguarding skills and performs water rescues according to training standard.

  • Administers first aid, CPR, defibrillation and oxygen according to division standard of care.

  • Teaches swimming lessons, water fitness classes and other related programs if applicable.

  • Assists in managing facility operations including testing of pool chemistry, cleaning duties, maintenance, and required to perform shift leader duties when directed.

  • Performs pool reception duties, program promotions and registration as required.

  • Follows management directives and complies with standards of operation as required by management.

Education/Experience

Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, understand simple processes, operation of emergency equipment and perform routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.

No experience required.

Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification (required).

Current American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid Certifications or equivalent (required).

Valid driver's license (required).

All City of Norfolk Lifeguard candidates must successfully complete both a written knowledge exam and water skills screening.

The preferred candidate will possess:

  • One (1) year of experience as a certified lifeguard.

  • Experience with teaching swimming lessons.

  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification.

Additional Information & Requirements

Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.

  • Must be at least 16 years old to work pools and at least 17 years old to work beaches.

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (required).

  • Current American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certifications or equivalent (required).

  • Valid driver's license required.

  • Full-Time Lifeguards must be available to 40 hours per week on weekdays and weekends depending on operational and program needs.

Work Location: Various City of Norfolk pool facilities, beaches and waterfronts; depends on staffing and operational needs.

Work Hours: 40 hours per week. Five days per week, both weekdays and weekend shifts required.

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
