News Corp Australia Head of Commercial Sport in NSW, Australia

What’s the role?

News Corp Australia is looking for a Head of Commercial for Sport to join the team on a parental leave contract to start from December 2024 through to December 2025.

The Head of Commercial, Sport is a senior leadership role responsible for driving the commercial strategy and revenue growth of the sports division within NewsCorp Australia. This role involves developing and executing commercial products and initiatives, forging strategic sporting partnerships, and maximizing the value of the company’s sports content, products, platforms and brands. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the sports media landscape, strong business acumen, and a proven track record in commercial leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Commercial Strategy Development : Create and implement a comprehensive commercial strategy to drive revenue growth across the sports division, aligning with the company's broader business objectives.

  • Revenue Generation : Identify and capitalize on revenue opportunities through sponsorships, advertising, partnerships, licensing, and other commercial activities related to sports content.

  • Partnership Management : Build and manage strategic relationships with key stakeholders, including sports organizations, multiple internal editorial, product and brand teams, advertisers, and corporate partners.

  • Content Monetization : Develop and execute strategies to maximize the commercial value of sports content across all platforms, including digital, video, print and social media.

  • Market Analysis : Conduct market research and analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and competitive threats in the sports media industry, using insights to inform commercial strategies.

  • Budget Management : Develop and manage the commercial budget for the sports division, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and maximizing return on investment.

  • Sales Leadership : Lead and mentor the commercial sport partnership team, setting clear objectives, providing guidance, and driving high performance to meet or exceed revenue targets.

  • Contract Negotiation : Oversee negotiations for major commercial deals, ensuring favorable terms and compliance with company policies and legal requirements.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration : Work closely with other departments, including content, marketing, and finance, to ensure alignment and integration of commercial sport initiatives.

  • Brand Development : Support the growth and development of NewsCorp sport brands, enhancing their market positions and reputations.

  • Performance Metrics : Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the effectiveness of commercial activities and make data-driven adjustments as needed.

Who are you?

  • Educational Background : Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Sports Management, or a related field is highly desirable

  • Experience : Significant experience in commercial roles within the sports or media industry, including in senior leadership positions.

  • Industry Knowledge : Deep understanding of the sports media landscape, including key trends, technologies, and revenue models.

  • Commercial Acumen : Proven track record of driving revenue growth and securing high-value commercial deals in the sports sector.

  • Strategic Thinking : Exceptional strategic and analytical thinking skills, with the ability to translate insights into actionable commercial strategies.

  • Leadership : Strong leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to inspire and manage a high-performing commercial team.

  • Communication : Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present ideas and influence stakeholders at all levels.

  • Negotiation Skills : Strong negotiation skills, with experience in closing complex deals and managing high-stakes partnerships.

  • Digital Proficiency: Knowledge of digital media platforms, content monetization strategies, and emerging technologies in sports media.

  • Network: Established network within the sports and media industry, with strong relationships with key stakeholders.

  • Innovation and Creativity: Ability to drive innovation and bring creative solutions to commercial challenges.
