Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG), The Shipping Monitor and Engagement Coordinator, is responsible for coordinating the shipping season activities and supervising the shipping monitors based in Pond Inlet. This role is accountable for tracking the ship movements, community relations and communications related to the shipping season. Support our Northern Affairs team with engagements related to shipping and environmental monitoring.

Location: Oakville/Iqaluit/Pond Inlet

Main Accountabilities

  1. Support the Sr. Manager, ESG in hiring, training, and on-boarding Shipping Monitors by coordinating cross functionally with HR, IT and the local office in Pond Inlet.

  2. Supervise the day-to-day activities of Shipping Monitors by setting the work schedule, checking attendance, tracking hours worked, and answering questions that arise. This includes splitting weekends to be “on-call” with the Sr. Manager ESG or another teammate to ensure 24/7 support of the Shipping Monitor team during the active shipping season.

  3. In collaboration with Community Strategic Development (CSD) progress and implement Baffinland’s Stakeholder and Community Engagement Plan;

  4. Work with the Specialist, Regional Monitoring to develop community engagement initiatives that drive a stronger knowledge base and buy-in of environmental monitoring activities, including shipping, in the North Baffin Communities;

  5. Oversee the collection of shipping related data, manage data by using spreadsheets and software, and compile data into reports; This includes tracking community feedback and responding within 24 hours;

  6. Help support data input and utilization of Staketracker for all SD initiatives and track actions stemming from SD’s community engagement activities;

  7. Draft shipping related documentation like Baffinland’s Marine Shipping & Vessel Management Report;

  8. Attend the daily shipping meetings and execute actions that may be tasked by senior leadership.

  9. Support the Sr. Manager ESG with shipping related community engagements by coordinating annual meetings, drafting materials, organizing translation, coordinating travel, logistics, and participating as required;

  10. Participate in technical conferences and Industry Events by preparing presentation materials, reports, organizing logistics, taking notes, presenting materials and ideas.

  11. Available to travel to Pond Inlet, the Mine Site or other remote locates, as needed to support the Shipping Monitor program and shipping related activities.

Main Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in sustainable development, environmental science, engineering or related field; (required)

• Master’s degree in sustainable development, environmental science, community development, or related field. (preferred)

• Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience working in the Marine, Environment, or Maritime Transport, and/or Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience working on government/community relations experience related to environmental monitoring, shipping, transportation or policy development;

• Experience conducting community engagement and facilitation;

• Experience working with Inuit Organizations;

• Experience in conveying technical information to various audiences;

• Experience supervising staff.

• Problem Solving/ Decision Making skills: Ability to define a problem; determine the cause of the problem; identify, prioritize, and reach logical conclusions, and decide on appropriate plan of action;

• Project Management skills: Ability to plan, organise, delegating, and monitor progress against the objectives set;

• Strong understanding of environmental management and the governance system in Nunavut;

• Ability to travel at least one week a month, as required
