JOB OVERVIEW

XCEL Engineeringis seeking a qualified applicant for a Senior Technical Operations Manager role. The Technical Operations Manager (TOM)leads all aspects of operations for the Veterans Affairs (VA) tenant systems (including infrastructure management, user management coordination, and data management assistance). The VA tenant systems conducts precision medicine research for the benefit of our veterans.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Strengthen and maintain relationships with VA and other DOE lab users
  • Work closely with the program's chief data architect to manage the data requirements of researchers
  • Lead facilitation of user and project onboarding and offboarding
  • Manage the hardware lifecycle including storage as a service and high-performance computing clusters
  • Collaborate with KDI on technical recommendations for systems health and improvements
  • Provide full-cycle resource management including receiving VM requests and discussing with the Resource Utilization Committee (RUC)
  • Using expert knowledge and judgment, analyze incoming project requests and make recommendations to the RUC as to which of those to pursue
  • Prepare and present monthly reports on systems usage, project financials, task status, etc.
  • Document and maintain procedures and processes and provide recommendations to improve efficiencies

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • United States citizen with the ability to obtain a security clearance.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, IT Operations Management or a related field of study and eight (8) years of confirmed experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
  • 5+ years confirmed experience in project management.
  • Technical knowledge of Information systems management, ability to gather and understand systems requirements for projects, and general understanding of systems architecture.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to support regular interactions with Laboratory staff and sponsors and to prepare reports, proposals, publications, presentations, and journal articles are required.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills supporting team building, partnership, and leadership.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • IT project management experience.
  • Experience working in a research or technical environment.
  • Motivated self-starter who works independently and participates creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

  • Inside office environment.
  • Working on a computer for long periods of time.
  • May involve long period of sitting at a desk.
  • The wo k environment is fast-paced and sometimes involves extreme deadline pressures.
