JOB GOAL:

Limited Term Position – Continuation of this position is contingent upon future funding from the Iowa Department of Corrections, this position is currently funded for FY 25.

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

POSITION IS LOCATED INSIDE THE IOWA MEDICAL CLASSIFICATION CENTER (IMCC), A DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS FACILITY. Under limited supervision, the instructor is responsible for teaching life skills to incarcerated students at IMCC. The instructor collaborates with fellow instructors on the development of curriculum aligned to adult education standards.

Work Schedule: 07:30-12:30 Monday - Thursday, this position doesn’t work during college breaks or holidays.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Effectively teach basic skills, literacy and HSED subject areas to eligible offenders in a variety of instructional formats.

  • Work with juveniles who need life skills instruction.

  • Maintain student and program records for reporting purposes.

  • Collaborate with fellow instructors at IMCC, as well as in the Department of Corrections, on the development of curricula for offenders.

  • Act as a liaison among the Iowa Department of Corrections, IMCC, and Kirkwood Community College, supporting the operations of IMCC.

  • Know and follow Department of Corrections security protocols and policies including key and radio control, supervision of incarcerated individuals in education, de-escalation and personal safety techniques, which may include training and use of chemical agents, first aid, and incident command systems.

  • Complete Department of Corrections training quarterly, face-to-face and online.

  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.

In addition, candidates must be able to pass the DOC security clearance requirements and graduate from the four week Department of Corrections New Employee Training which may include use of force, personal safety, chemical agents, CPR, blood borne pathogens, suicide prevention, and other DOC training.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves working in an office setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree with relevant instructional experience is required.In addition, candidates must be able to pass the DOC security clearance requirements and graduate from the four week Department of Corrections New Employee Training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS,LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

  • Candidates with prior corrections, adult education, or at-risk teaching experience are preferred.
