Oberlin College Groundsworker II in Oberlin, Ohio

The Grounds Department in Facilities Operations invites applications for the position of Grounds Worker II. This is a full-time, 40-hour per week, 12-month Service Employee position reporting to the Grounds Services Manager. The schedule for this position is Monday -- Friday, 7:00 am -- 3:30 pm. Performs full range of Grounds Worker II daily duties, horticulture work, preventative maintenance tasks. Turf and landscape management around campus buildings. A list of typical duties for this position includes, but is not limited to, the following:

• Assist in maintaining campus turf using trim mower (60" zero turn), 104" zero turn mower and tractor mower with 11' bat wing pull behind mower on occasion when the Grounds Specialists are not available. • Use power edger, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, pole pruners and other hand tools. • Remove horticultural debris and trash from campus grounds and structures. • Identify pest or disease concerns and report to Grounds Manager, to use Integrated Pest Management practices. • Operate a wide range of grounds equipment including front-end loaders, tractors, mowers, lifts • Build/Maintain sandstone and brick paving surfaces, patch asphalt roadways, fill in gravel and maintain retaining walls. • Prune trees and shrubs to maintain health structure and aesthetics. • Install/plant trees, shrubs, perennials, ground covers, and turf. • Shovel, brush, and plow snow from paved surfaces campus-wide as required to provide safe access to college facilities. Apply deicing compounds to paving surfaces. • Maintain landscape with new, old and seasonal plantings by using deadheading, cut back, shearing and hand pruning techniques. • Apply herbicide and insecticide applications on turf, ornamental, Woody and herbaceous plants under the Ohio Commercial Pesticide Applicator Trained Serviceperson and complete daily pesticide application forms. • Ability to work independently with self-motivation and with groups with maintenance and project tasks. • Effectively respond to and handle various emergencies as appropriate, and, when necessary, refer situations to a manager. • Lead groups of Grounds Staff during special projects related to assigned zone. • Follow all college policies, local ordinances, OSHA and other applicable state and local safety policies and standards • Carry a radio for communications at all times to provide coverage for immediate issues that may arise on campus as well as for normal communications of work related duties. • Complete and turn in work orders as noted in the work order procedure. • Drive campus vehicles/equipment of all types and sizes as necessary, adhering to and maintain the OC MVR Policy. Two years of experience in grounds related work, or in an appropriately related area; possess a valid Ohio driver's license and ability to meet the College's insurability standards. Demonstrated ability to operate a broad range of medium sized trucks, tractors, and implements related to grounds maintenance; the ability to read and follow written instructions; willingness to participate in training classes and seminars to improve job skills; experience demonstrating the ability to do the following: lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; work outside in extreme weather conditions; carry out duties of moderate to occasional considerable physical exertion for extended periods; including frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, squatting, kneeling and stooping; work effectively under time pressure when preparing facilities for events. Must have basic familiarity with the usage of computers, computer software, and internet browsing ability.
