Oberlin College HVACR Technician (Journey Level) in Oberlin, Ohio

The Department of Facilities Operations at Oberlin College has an opening for a *HVACR Technician. This is a full-time (40 hours per week) Tuesday through Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM, Saturday 6 AM to 2:30 PM,Service Employee position, reporting to the Director of Facilities Stewardship. Overtime and holiday work could be available for campus support. The Incumbent will have general responsibility for the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of HVAC, Refrigeration and Water Treatment equipment for properties owned or maintained by the College in support of the educational goals of the institution, and will perform the following (but not limited to the following) specific duties: Essential Job Functions: *

  • Perform service, maintenance and repair on fractional HP, high, medium, low and ultra low commercial refrigeration equipment (refrigerators, freezers, scientific refrigerators and freezers, ice machines, soft serve machines, walk-ins, reach-ins and beverage chiller systems.
  • Familiarity with TXV's, reversing valves, differential pressures and site glass operations.
  • Skilled in brazing, soldering and pipefitting.
  • Maintenance and repair of Geothermal systems, including water-to-water and water-to-air heat pumps;
  • Triage Commercial Variable Refrigerant Flow ( VRF) systems including Mitsubishi City Multi  VRF technology to help determine if repairs can be done in house or a contractor needs to consulted. Perform preventative maintenance on the same;
  • Maintenance and repair of chillers, centrifugal and reciprocating compressors, evaporators, condensers,  DDC and pneumatic valves, associated pumps, and cooling towers;
  • Maintenance and repair of DX AC units, window AC units, including hermetic, digital scroll compressors, expansion valves, capillary tubes, and coils;
  • Maintenance and repair of  HVAC related air compressors, receivers, and air dryers;
  • Maintenance and repair of low pressure steam systems, F&T traps, vacuum and condensate pumps,  PRV stations, tube and shell, and plate heat exchangers, hydronic systems;
  • Maintenance and repair of low-pressure boilers, safety valves and controls, low water cut-offs;
  • Proficient knowledge of Direct Digital Control and pneumatic heating controls;
  • Maintenance and repair of large industrial AHUs,  VAV boxes, and ERUs, heat wheels, controls, face and bypass dampers, motors, bearings, coils, timers, control panels, and evaporative coolers.
  • Maintain and use Building Automation Systems ( BAS) programs as necessary;
  • Read and correctly interpret and use blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications;
  • Safely operate and maintain a variety of diagnostic hand and power tools including vacuum pump, test/calibration equipment, reclamation equipment, and fabrication tools;
  • Follow all  OSHA, Federal, State, Local and College safety regulations, codes and policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment ( PPE);
  • Complete and turn in work orders as noted in the work order procedure;
  • Carry a radio for communication at all times to provide coverage for immediate issues that may arise on campus as well as for normal communications of work related duties.
