The Career Planning and Networking Center is dedicated to transforming student success through hands-on experiential learning and is excited to announce an opportunity for a Career Counselor for Internships. This role is at the forefront of shaping students' professional journeys by guiding them through meaningful internship experiences that bridge the gap between education and career readiness.

Expectations include, but are not limited to, providing general career advisement to all students with a focus on internships and experiential learning. The dynamic role will assist students seeking internships by providing workshops on resume writing, interview skills, and professional behavior; providing general career advisement to all students with a focus on internships and experiential learning and advising students on the requirements to register for academic internships. The Career Counselor for Internships will also serve as a resource to employers interested in hiring students for internship positions.

The Career Planning and Networking Center plays a vital role in the University's mission to nurture a community where students grow intellectually, thrive socially, and live purposefully. The CPNC facilitates career exploration and preparation for SUNY Oneonta students and alumni. It provides students with access to internships and other career development programs and services and helps them develop the tools they need to be agile employees who can adapt to the increasing complexity of life and work in the 21st century. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct individual career appointments to assist students in the career decision-making process, career exploration, and job/internship search.

  • Assist in the planning and facilitating of career programming throughout the year, including career fairs, resume review events, career workshops, employer events, and faculty classroom presentations, etc.

  • Develop and provide engaged programming to increase students' awareness of any successful participation in internships.

  • Manage the approval and registration process of undergraduate and graduate internships.

  • Assist the Director of the CPNC in the administration of multiple internship support funds including the processes for marketing, awarding, and disbursing the funds.

  • Participate in departmental professional development to learn best practices in career advising, career services, employer relations/college recruiting, and stakeholder cultivation.

  • Use technology to better serve students, such as: Handshake (for assisting jobs with internship and job searches), LinkedIn, and Twitter/X (for assisting students with networking), etc.

  • Undertake special project administration or research through work with office staff, teams, and programs.

  • Working nights and weekends as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft 365 including Excel

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree

  • At least 2 years of experience in higher education preferably in an advising role

  • Knowledge of career development tools such as Handshake and Focus 2

  • Experience working with and serving diverse populations
