Position Announcement

 

Utah Valley University is seeking a part-time GEAR UP Outreach Assistant! The Assistant coordinates students' academic progress and attendance with GEAR UP counselors. Assists GEAR UP Counselors in planning and providing GEAR UP academic, outreach, and group activities.

 

Summary of Responsibilities

 

• Works closely with GEAR UP counselors to determine students at-risk to fail because of absenteeism and poor performance in classes.

• Tracks and follows up with students as requested by a GEAR UP counselor, and keeps contact with parents/guardians.

• Organizes and assists with GEAR UP group, fund raising, and outreach activities. Attends college tours, parent/student nights, and other GEAR UP group and outreach activities as requested by GEAR UP counselors.

• Checks student academic progress, and standardized testing results and reports to GEAR UP counselor. Administers and tracks student and parents' survey completion.

• Mentors students by talking to them about good decision-making processes and providing study-skills help. Tutors as needed and requested by GEAR UP counselors.

• Makes follow up calls, appointments, and visits as needed to families. Accompanies GEAR UP counselors on home visits when needed.

• Performs other job related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Graduation from an accredited institution with an associate's degree plus one year of experience related to the Summary of Duties or any combination of education and experience related to the Summary of Duties totaling three years.

 

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

 

Knowledge

 

• Must have basic academic knowledge as a result of a completion of a high school diploma or equivalent and have sufficient college preparation to pursue a college curriculum.

 

Skills

 

• Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills.

• Demonstrates teaching skills and is skilled in tutoring students of various academic levels.

 

Abilities

 

• Demonstrates the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

• Demonstrates the ability to organize schedules, prioritize tasks, and follow-through on assignments.

• Ability to successfully interact with students with diverse cultural and academic backgrounds.

• Ability to speak and translate Spanish to English is highly preferred.
