The Critical Environments Solutions Engineering group (CESE) within GDCO is responsible for establishing global Critical Environment (CE) infrastructure requirements and standards, developing and delivering CE efficiency and optimization programs and projects, and supporting 24/7/365 mission-critical CE instrumentation infrastructure within Microsoft’s global Datacenters.
CESE is seeking a Senior Service Engineer to join our Server Infrastructure team. This role is responsible for working in a diverse global team environment designing, automating, securing, configuring, and delivering support for the CESE server infrastructure & related programs and projects in existing and future Datacenters. Responsibilities include ownership of: infrastructure services design for critical datacenter systems, server and application monitoring ensuring KPIs & SLAs are met and maintained, verifying and implementing designs & solutions that help secure our server and application infrastructure, proof of concept pilots for new design and application onboarding, and infrastructure compliance & optimization. You will be part of a 24/7/365 support team and work closely with peer infrastructure engineering, application, support, Datacenter design and build teams including key decision makers across CO+I. You will develop and rely heavily on key partnerships with global Datacenter Operations teams at varying levels of the business, CO+I teams’ responsible for the design and delivery of Datacenters, Azure network engineering and architecture teams, and all groups affiliated with Microsoft Datacenters (Business & Property groups).
A successful candidate will possess a range of experience in the areas of Server and Service Operations, Server and Service Engineering and Management, security conscience server configuration and maintenance, automation methodologies that enhance infrastructure services, devices, as well as providing 24/7/365 operational support for business-critical server and service infrastructures. Experience should include Windows Server, Hyper-V, Active Directory, DNS, PowerShell and Line of Business application service engineering, architecture and design experience, service metric and KPI reporting, strong documentation skills, along with interpersonal awareness, proactivity, and a proven ability to manage and drive delivery of multiple simultaneous cross-group dependent server and service-based projects. The candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills with an ability to speak and present effectively to all levels of business. Familiarity with advanced design processes and concepts in architecting large Data center service, and support infrastructures.
Knowledge, experience, and skills:
Minimum 5 Years’ experience in designing, automating, securing, deploying, supporting, and maintaining server and application service architectures for large cloud-scale infrastructures.
Strong experience with Microsoft server & tooling platforms for infrastructure services such as Windows Server 2019, Active Directory, DNS, Hyper-V, DHCP, PowerShell scripting, SMTP Relay, Data Protection Services, service monitoring, incident alarming, compliance, and other services to aid in fulfilling operational monitoring, audit logging of events, compliance requirements, outages, or security-related issues.
Bias for mentoring others and documenting architectures, designs, implementation, and support processes with a variety of tools that help get team members up-to-speed quickly and stay informed.
Demonstrated experience and motivation for transitioning manual operational processes to automation and automating new processes leveraging DevOps principles.
Demonstrated ability to manage, prioritize and successfully execute multiple concurrent mission-critical infrastructure projects with little to no guidance.
Demonstrated ability to work in a global team environment while helping bring projects to successful outcomes and producing useful documentation artifacts.
Ability to balance competing demands for resources and adapt to changing priorities.
Proven ability to deliver projects on-time and within budget.
Proven ability to apply clear critical thinking in complex, stressful situations.
Provide meaningful and timely reporting of operational success metrics.
Preferred, not required:
Prior experience maintaining Datacenter Critical Environment systems and applications
Configuration management experience with PowerShell DSC, Puppet, Chef or similar
Working knowledge of vendor support contract terms, conditions, mechanism, and procedures.
Technical program development and/or program management experience a plus.
Travel will be involved.
