ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITY

Black & McDonald's Ottawa team is growing and is seeking to hire a Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Advisor!! If you are committed and collaborative professional looking to contribute to a hard-working, innovative team, this opportunity is for you.

This is a contract position for a duration of one (1) year with a potential for an extension that reports directly to the Project HSE Manager. The primary focus is to oversee project sites to ensure compliance with company, client, and government policies, procedures, acts and regulations. The HSE Advisor will ensure proper application and use of Black & McDonald's Health, Safety, and Environment Management System. This position will demonstrates leadership to drive safety as a core value.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide front-line HSE support to assigned workplace(s)

  • Assist and support the Regional HSE Manager in the development and implementation of HSE policies, programs and procedures, in accordance with Black & McDonald and regulatory requirements

  • Conduct formal and informal inspections of job sites, facilities, and equipment for compliance with general and specific safety standards

  • Participate in incident investigations, reviews and development of corrective actions

  • Participate in evaluation of subcontractor HSE management systems, loss control programs

  • Support the Certificate of Recognition Program (COR), for the Region

  • Ensure emergency response plans are in place and aligned with local regulatory, regional, divisional and corporate requirements

  • Maintain current knowledge of industry trends and practices regarding health, safety and environment

  • Support the annual HSE Management System Audit

  • Assist in developing and reviewing project safety plans and specific job hazard assessment and procedures

  • Ensure regular safety meetings are conducted and proper documentation is completed and logged as required

  • Provide HSE orientation to new employees, subcontractors and visitors as required

  • Facilitate administrative aspects of site safety; including filling out, transmitting, storage and disposal of documentation

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • A bachelor's degree or college diploma in a discipline such as Occupational Health & Safety or Environmental Studies would be preferred.

  • CSO or NCSO, Construction Safety Officer/National Construction Safety Officer preferred.

  • Certified Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) would be considered an asset

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 1-3 years of HSE work experience within a related industry (e.g. construction, FMO, service, utility)

  • Experience within a unionized environment is an asset

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent communicator (written & oral)

  • Ability to facilitate programs and present to large groups

  • Organized, detail oriented, a self-starter and an inspirational leader of your team.

  • Working knowledge of Provincial, and Local safety and environmental regulations and programs

  • Ability to obtain and hold reliability level security clearance.

  • Intermediate to advanced user of: MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and Outlook)

  • Valid Driver's License (with a clean abstract)

  • Ability to travel
