12 month contract

Position Overview:

The Student Services Administrator has the responsibility of collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to carry out all phases of the Special Education Program of the Area Education Agency, pursuant to the provisions of the Code of Iowa. He/She is responsible for collaborating with the Iowa Department of Education to successfully implement State regulations and guidelines related to special education.

Qualifications:

The qualifications of the position shall include, but not be limited to the following requirements:

Meets the requirements for one special education teaching endorsement and have three years of teaching experience in special education; or meet the practitioner licensure requirements for one of the following endorsements and have three years of teaching experience as a school audiologist, school psychologist, school social worker or speech-language pathologist; or a letter of authorization for special education supervisor issued prior to October 1, 1988;

Responsibilities:

A. Improvement of Instruction

  • Identify children requiring special education.

  • Ensure that each child receives an appropriate special education program or service.

  • Work in partnership with the Iowa Department of Education to assign appropriate weights for each child requiring special education programs or services as provided in section 281.9 of the Iowa Code.

  • Coordinate the special education program within the area served.

  • Promote the use of technology to improve services for special education students and efficient internal operations in the special education service area.

  • Assist local school districts in their planning process to provide quality special education services.

  • Ensure the special education service area delivers quality services to local school districts and their students.

  • Assist agency staff and local schools to use evidence-based instructional practices and the SDI framework to improve outcomes for learners with disabilities.

  • Develop and implement continuous improvement plans to address the student achievement of learners with disabilities in Great Prairie AEA.

    B. Management

  • Provide leadership and direction for service area personnel.

  • As a member of the management team, assist in developing policy affecting the operation of the Special Education Service Area.

  • Approve scheduling procedures and organizational plans used by the special education personnel.

  • Direct the preparation of reports for the Special Education Service Area, the Board, the Chief Administrator and the public.

  • Provide governmental agencies with required information and reports on or before designated timelines.

  • Submit to the Department of Education instructional and support program plans and criteria listed in Chapter 281.

  • Provide oversight and direction for recruitment, staff development; and evaluation of service area personnel.

  • Be knowledgeable about State and Federal Special Education Rules and Regulations.

  • Supervise AEA special education management, support and instructional personnel.

C. Public Relations

  • Assist in directing communications of the Area Education Agency and Special Education's philosophy, purposes, programs and other pertinent issues to AEA schools and the publics it serves.

  • Develop and model collaborative relationships with state, area, and local school agencies for the purpose of closing the achievement gap and success of all learners.

    D. Professional Growth

  • Stay abreast of new ideas in the fields of education, special education and leadership.

  • To contribute to the profession as well as derive benefits from it.

    E. Communications

  • Provide for communications internally within the Area Education Agency and externally with the member school districts and the general public.

  • Work cooperatively with the other service areas and outside agencies.

    Assume other duties as assigned by the Chief Administrator.
