Work Schedule, Hours per week: Varies depending on department needs, 25 hours per week

Pay Range: \$25.81-\$33.57 and determined based on relevant years of work experience.

Position Summary: Support the mental health, academic, and career counseling needs of students through their time at Johnson County Community College (JCCC), providing counseling sessions, training opportunities, workshops, and presentations. Serve in multiple capacities, including academic advisors, teachers, personal counselors, career counselors, consultants, student advocates, and leaders on campus.

Required Qualifications:

Master\'s degree in counseling or related field required.

One or more years of Counseling experience required.

Knowledge of student development as it relates to a comprehensive community college.

Preferred Qualifications:

One to two years of education or career counseling experience preferred.

Community college experience in Student Services preferred.

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Serve students individually through walk-in sessions, appointments, advising desk, telephone calls, e-mail, and other distance-advising tools.
  • Provide academic advising to students using a holistic counseling approach that serves to address all the educational, social, and personal needs of the student.
  • Develop and manage a large amount of information and resources regarding over 300 different internal degrees and certificates and numerous transfer institutions in order to serve students in the most effective, efficient, and comprehensive manner.
  • Research, organize, and execute engaging workshops and sessions specifically designed to assist with academic issues and support the overall well-being of students. Present workshops on mental health, academic, and social difficulties to faculty and staff to help identify and address student issues and meet student mental health needs.
  • Provide mental health services for a range of issues that students face, such as those related to stress, anxiety, management, domestic violence, relationships, academic or job pressures, substance abuse, bereavement, eating disorders, and trauma. Conduct risk assessments and provide in-person and virtual responses and interventions during times of crisis. Evaluate the mental health needs of students and recommend solution-focused interventions and treatment options to address their concerns in an effective manner. Support students in creating goals and objectives.
  • Provide specific recommendations for students struggling with suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, substance use, and addictive behaviors, including facilitating referrals for treatment and other resources as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain mental health services across JCCC, which include support groups and well-being programs that raise awareness about mental health issues and available resources. Coordinate outreach programs and prevention initiatives to raise awareness of mental health issues on campus. Develop opportunities for students to come together to share their experiences, learn new ways to cope, and find comfort with each ot er. Cover topics such as grief and loss, building better habits, managing anger, and taking charge of one\'s emotions.
  • Provide career counseling and interpretation of personality assessments, such as the Strong Interest Inventory and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date, and confidential documentation of all student interactions, records, and meetings.
  • Maintain credentials for ongoing state and/or national licensure.
  • Work collaboratively with JCCC staff and other mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers, to provide comprehensive care to students and ensure counseling information is up-to-date. Serve on a wide range of committees to promote student success and mental health, such as the Sexual Assault Response team and KC Scholars program. Contribute to campus-wide efforts to promote a positive campus environment and the overall well-being of our student body.
  • Engage in continuing professional development, research best practices in the mental health field, and incorporate emerging mental health treatment techniques into daily counseling.
