This role will support Patient Care Service (PCS) and Operations in all activations and waivers to operationalize new clinical areas.

This is an onsite role.

A Brief Overview

The Director of Operations and Activation is a crucial role in the Stanford Health Care and Stanford School of Medicine framework. Primary responsibilities involve collaboration with the Vice President, Patient Care Services (PCS), Chief Nursing Officer, Inpatient, and other directors and managers in PCS to provide support, planning, tracking and monitoring for all activations as well as post go live in which PCS is involved.

Other key areas of responsibility include strategic planning and management of personnel, operational, and financial aspects of projects that span multiple departments or services. The goal is to ensure quality, cost-effective outcomes and a safe, efficient work environment.

The Director plays a pivotal role in setting up new clinical areas to aid staff and patients, and act in a planning capacity for Operations. Serving as a resource and expert to staff, managers, and directors, the Director also functions as a liaison between departments and Service Lines within SHC.

Collaboration with the Executive Director, Business Operations is crucial to ensure that the operational areas are equipped with the tools and information required for efficient management of their changing areas. The Director reports to the Chief Nursing Information Officer.

What you will do

  • Defines performance objectives and metrics for the department and assesses the level of competence of staff in a timely manner. Continuously assesses and improves department's performance based on "customer” needs; directs and participates in improving performance and services which benefit staff, patients and other customers. Collaborates with Clinic Managers to assist them and to maintain appropriate quality control programs in response to internal standards of care and external requirements.

  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services and which meet the external regulatory and statutory requirements; ensures that policies and procedures are compatible with the function and goals of the hospital and clinics. Monitors and assures compliance with regulatory agencies, JCAHO accrediting, and hospital policy for patient services and environmental and personnel safety.

  • Ensures effective fiscal management of the department and ensures the proper utilization of organization's financial resources. Develops a department budget within designated deadlines according to all budgetary policies and procedures. Monitors budgets and takes corrective action when necessary, including administrative cost centers. Recommends ways to reduce expenditures and enhance revenues without compromising quality of services.

  • Establishes programs and goals that promote the delivery of quality care and service in conjunction with ACNOs, directors, managers. Facilitates coordination of integration of services within PCS and with other departments by continually collaborating Responsible for developing and implementing mechanisms and relationships that create alignment along economic, clinical delivery, service quality, and patient safety dimensions.

  • Activates new patient care locations and facilities by assuming project management point person role and collaborating with all necessary departments.

  • Establishes and maintains an effective interface and leadership role with support departments, such as IT, HR and Design and Construction including the development and use of trackers and other tools designed to hold all parties accountable in the activation process.

  • Follows SHS safety and Infection Prevention guidelines, policies and procedures for self, patients, visitors and employees. Interprets and enforces Infection Prevention and Safety policies. Works collaboratively with Infection Prevention.

  • Manages Human Resources (HR) to ensure quality services and promote employee relations within their area. Oversees the hiring, orientation, training, scheduling, and supervision of staff.

  • Communicates the hospital's mission, vision, and values, as well as departmental goals, to all staff. Attains all agreed to goals and objectives within specified time frames, as part of the organization's overall mission.

  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives. Effectively communicates departmental, organizational, and industrial information to staff.

  • Provides leadership and guidance to other leaders and staff in goal setting, problem solving, resource management, and outcome achievement. Ensures there are adequate ongoing educational programs and training opportunities for all staff in area of responsibility, including orientation of new employees and relevant in-service education sessions.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university.

  • Master's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience managing and leading programs, work units or departments of comparable size, scope and complexity.

  • Experience with activation activities on a broad scale

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to contribute to health care policy formulation when working in partnership with a multidisciplinary team of health care providers

  • Ability to delegate responsibly to others, activities according to ability, level of preparation, the standards of practice and regulatory guidelines

  • Ability to develop programs and lead process improvement projects

  • Ability to establish the strategic direction and business plans for a functional group

  • Ability to initiate and implement change conducive to the improvement of the quality and safety of patient care delivery

  • Ability to provide leadership, influence others to meet patient needs and achieve shared goals, to effectively prioritize system resources to provide quality and valued patient care, promote cooperative behaviors, act as a role model, resource and mentor

  • Ability to supervise, coach, mentor, train, and evaluate work results

  • Ability to use information and keep abreast of developments in technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making in patient care

  • Knowledge of current theories, principles, practices, standards, emerging technologies, techniques and approaches in the nursing profession, and the health care system, and the responsibility and accountability for the outcome of practice

  • Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations; standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies and procedures governing the provision of nursing care in the area of assignment

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of organization, administration, fiscal and personnel management essential to the practice of nursing in the larger context of health care

  • Knowledge of principles, practices and current trends in health care and hospital system organization and administration sufficient to provide clinical management, leadership, coordination, and operational direction for assigned areas of responsibility.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Nursing / RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure

  • Evidence-based Design Accreditation and Certification (EDAC) or

  • ASHE Certifications for Health Care Facility, Construction, and Design Professionals or similar certification preferred

  • Project Management Certification preferred

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $94.28 - $124.90 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
