Job Duties

Assessment, treatment and patient care responsibilities are delivered with a knowledgeof patient growth and development and are appropriate to the ages of the patientsserved.ASSESSMENTIdentifies and documents initial observation and assessment of the patient's needs forimmediate nursing action.Systematically and accurately assesses nursing needs of the patient in order to detectpertinent changes in the clinical picture.Assesses the needs of patient’s family or significant others in regards to the patient’sdirect or long term care.Selects, plans, evaluates all pertinent data and documents care based on this assessment.Assesses, intervenes, and documents appropriately to meet patient's educational,psychosocial, and discharge planning needs appropriate to outpatient care andeffectiveness.Initiates appropriate referrals to other departments, services, and/or outside agencies forpatient care.

DIRECT PATIENT CAREGives comprehensive, confidential patient care.Initiates and follows through with patient and family teaching and evaluation.Consults with unit Nursing Leadership regarding significant changes in patient'scondition.Collaborates with all members of the health care team.Communicates relevant patient care information upon in house transfer.Utilizes patient care standards in clinical practice.Documents pertinent information regarding patient's response to treatment andprogression toward goals in patient's chart.Transcribes outpatient physician orders, gives written and verbal instructions to patientand/or significant others and documents in patient chart accurately and timely.Seeks clarification of physician's written prescriptions and orders that are unclear orinappropriate.Interprets clinical data and notifies the physician promptly if immediate changes inmanagement are indicated.Administers either IM, PO or subcutaneous medications in compliance with policies andprocedures and does teaching with patient, family, and significant other (e.g., signs andsymptoms of medication, food and drug interaction, physical, psycho social andnutrition in accordance to cultural needs).SAFETYChecks to ensure that emergency equipment is on hand and in good working order.Checks that policy and procedure is followed accurately and consistently on properhandling of sharps.Recognizes and reports malfunction or failure of equipment used in the area toBiomedical Engineering; takes appropriate action to repair/replace such equipment (e.g.,cardiac monitors, defibrillators, suction apparatus, doppler, O2 tank, liquid nitogen tank,laser equipment, CO2 tank, pulse oximetry and pacemaker).Checks that all monitoring equipment and ventilator alarms are set according tostandards.INDIRECT PATIENT CARE ACTIVITIESParticipates in multidisciplinary patient care rounds by presenting findings on patients.Applies principles of infection control and safety.Assists in the orientation of new personnel.Provides clinical supervision of Hospital Attendants, and other ancillary staff.Practices and adheres to established departmental policies and procedures, objectives,quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards;promotes adherence to Patient Bill of Rights.Customer Service: respect, flexibility, knowledge, confidence, professionalism, pleasantattitude, patience, and helpfulness. All responses should be timely, professional, caring,and respectful in accordance with Customer Service Performance expectations.Understands and adheres to the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct.Familiar with the Medical Center’s Mission, Vision, and Values Statements.OTHER JOB RESPONSIBILITIESOrients patient's family to new environment; develops rapport with patient's family.Relieves the Director as required.Assists in data collection and analysis of Quality Assurance/CQI monitors; participates in implementation of follow up action.Effectively utilizes the hospital computer system as it pertains to job responsibilities and in accordance with hospital policy.Participates actively on Quality Improvement committees as assigned. Participates in all safety and hazard procedures.Assists other personnel as needed.Keeps up-to-date with current trends pertinent to area of assignment.Participates in continuing education activities; attends scheduled in-service programs; shares informationgained at conferences with colleagues.Responds to hospital codes (Code 9, Code Blue, etc.,) as assignedResponds to emergencies in non-clinical areas as per policy and procedure.Performs other related duties as assigned.Attends monthly staff meetings.BASIC COMPETENCIESEducationGraduation from accredited school of Nursing with a BSN degree.Current NJ license as RN or temporary permit to practice in New Jersey required. If practicing undertemporary permit, must obtain license within 12 months.Experience:At least one year of experience.

SkillsBLS, ACLS, IV and certification.PALS Certification within 1 year.Demonstrates competence in the following:Cardiac knowledgeIV insertion12 leads EKG reading/Cardiac arrhythmiasGood oral and written communication skills.Good interpersonal skills.Speaks, reads and writes English to the extent required by the position. Second language a plus.JOB SETTING/PHYSICAL DEMANDSAll patient care areas.Frequently prolonged standing/walking.Lifts, positions, pushes, and/or transfers patients.Protective clothing worn: face shield, gloves, impermeable gown, particulate respirator.
