As a Senior Communications Specialist for a Fortune 100 company, you will serve as the primary communicator for the Caterpillar Foundation and Caterpillar Inc.’s sustainability initiatives. You will be responsible for developing, leading and managing positive relationships with outside vendors, media outlets and key internal and external business partners.

Description:

You will be a vital member of the Enterprise Communications team, supporting the enterprise’s efforts globally through strategic, integrated internal and external communications, including public affairs initiatives that promote and protect the Caterpillar brand. The position is responsible for understanding the enterprise strategy to ensure that all Caterpillar Foundation and sustainability communications support and activate engagement on that plan.

You must be viewed as a trusted advisor within the Foundation and sustainability teams on a wide range of internal and external messaging that directly impacts our reputation within the general public and targeted audiences.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and manage the Caterpillar Foundation communications needs, such as internal and external communications strategies, content creation and communications planning.

  • Manage the Caterpillar Foundation’s external creative vendor, providing strategic direction for communication plans, social media channels, public relations initiatives, large activations (events) and internal/external communications efforts. Provide regular updates to Caterpillar Foundation and Caterpillar Inc. leadership on various deliverables.

  • Develop, maintain and manage the Caterpillar Foundation’s disaster communications process – working closely with and aligning the right stakeholders across Caterpillar Inc., the Caterpillar Foundation, the Cat dealer network and our Foundation partners.

  • Define a structured communications program by creating and developing themes, formats, media and timetables for major programs/presentations and orchestrate from concept to execution.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with peers throughout the philanthropy industry, keeping abreast of the latest trends in the industry, topics of interest and areas of strategic partnership; thus, providing recommendations and opportunities in the Corporate Social Responsibility environment to the Caterpillar Foundation leadership.

  • Lead and manage Caterpillar Inc.’s communications needs to support its long-standing commitment to sustainability, such as internal and external communications strategies, content creation, communications planning.

  • Manage large, complex external-facing projects through completion under tight deadlines, including co-ownership of Caterpillar’s Annual Sustainability Report along with Caterpillar’s sustainability team. Provide communications expertise in the development and execution of the report. Manage the external creative vendor, providing strategic direction for the execution of the report. Provide regular updates to leadership on various deliverables.

  • Provide communications that support sustainability as one of Caterpillar’s five Values in Action and provide inspiration to our key stakeholders on our purpose to help our customers build a better world in a sustainable way.

  • Exhibit exceptional initiative and communications leadership across the corporation – while working in close collaboration with key team members and business partners, such as Investor Relations, HR and Marketing & Brand.

  • Collaborate with internal and external editorial teams, global communications community and subject matter experts on promotion, content capture and storytelling of content related to the Foundation and sustainability. Serve as the communication focal point and deliver communications to employees across the enterprise.

  • Provide quality and value that facilitates employee communications and supports the development, marketing and promotion of the communications.

  • Engage with both traditional and non-traditional media outlets to advance the messaging by promoting story ideas, preparing briefing materials and drafting press releases and media statements as needed.

  • Act as an advisor or consultant to senior management on communications.

  • Perform other related communications duties as assigned.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field.

  • 10 or more years of communications experience.

  • Understanding of current trends and developments within the global philanthropy and sustainability landscapes.

Top Candidate Will Also Have:

  • Previous experience in a corporate communications role.

  • Strong communication skills, specifically written communications, presentation development and storytelling.

  • Proven ability to lead outside vendors and internal business partners.

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously while paying close attention to details.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills throughout various levels of an organization.

  • Hands-on experience developing and executing a strategic communication plan reflective of the core business objectives.

  • Experience in leveraging multiple communication channels to reach desired audiences, including social media, media and customer events.
