Team or Function Overview

This position will be at the Peru, Illinois commercial plant operations team, located about 75 minutes southwest of Chicago. The GAF Polyiso Facility in Peru was founded in 2024 and produces Polyiso insulation board in a very clean, state-of-the-art facility. Short for polyisocyanurate, polyiso is a flat insulation board that is widely used in commercial construction for new and retrofit applications.

Summary

The Quality Control Technician is responsible for supporting the GAF ISO plant in maintaining our excellent standard of quality. This will be accomplished by completing raw material and finished product testing, managing Commercial Test Lab testing requirements, in addition to completing internal calibrations/verifications. This position will also be responsible for coordinating all activities at the R&D Prototyping Lab space at the GAF ISO plant in Peru, IL. This role is a salary non-exempt position that will report to the Quality Engineer. The ideal employee will be able to occasionally flex hours as needed to cover the needs of the business as well as the ability to travel to other GAF sites and jobsite visits when necessary.

Essential Duties

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Involved in process improvement and troubleshooting initiatives directly relating to product quality.

  • Help ISO production team with daily QC testing procedures to include next day sample cutting

  • Involved in product quality decisions regarding finished products in accordance with ISO quality systems manual.

  • Perform monthly calibration verifications on all equipment

  • Input and review QC Data as it is tested and notify the Process Engineers of any out of spec or questionable data.

  • Communicate all in-process QC results to the Production Team

  • Follow the QC Department guidelines defined within the Quality Services and Process Driven Culture standards.

  • Perform all required job duties without direct supervision and provide guidance to less experienced personnel as needed.

  • Comply with all safety regulations and policies (safety glasses, face shields, cutting goggles, respirators, lock out tag out procedures, etc.)

  • Collect and report information from roofing contractors and distill them down to key insights and document.

  • Work cross-functionally with relevant GAF departments including, but not exclusive to Technical, Building and Roofing Science, CARE, Marketing, and Manufacturing to help maintain consistency among initiatives to improve products and services in Commercial Roofing.

  • Lead, help build and maintain Prototyping Lab space at ISO plant in Peru, IL to help build prototypes on novel ideas and maintain safe operation of the lab.

  • Work with R&D, Marketing, and Technical teams to build, field test and modify product prototypes to produce roofing components and/or systems that improve resiliency, efficiency, cost effectiveness, and/or ease of installation.

  • Hands on working knowledge and build prototypes using 3D printer or other equipment.

  • Document standard operating procedures (SOP) for all equipment in Prototyping Lab.

  • Assist the ISO team with any production or quality related tasks as delegated by process engineers or production manager.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to occasionally lift 25-50 pounds

  • Visual acuity to inspect product, read documents, computer screens, etc

  • Manual dexterity to operate equipment, computer entry, etc

  • Must have the ability to work in plant/warehouse environment (including high/low temperatures, dust, humidity, etc)

  • Must be able to wear respirator as needed

  • High School diploma or GED

  • 2+ years of manufacturing experience, in a fast paced continuous process

  • Ability to communicate, both written and orally, in English

  • Ability to occasionally flex hours as needed to cover the needs of the business as well as the ability to travel to other GAF sites and jobsite visits when necessary.

  • Previous experience in Quality or lab testing and experience supporting production goals

  • Ability to balance multiple priorities

  • Basic knowledge of machine and mixing operations

  • Familiarity with finished products testing, grading, and disposition

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
