The Department of Spiritual Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a Part-Time Chaplain Extern:

Summary:

The Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Student/Chaplain Extern commits to learning and growing in competence and proficiency in the practice of spiritual care in a manner consistent with the Penn Medicine mission and values. Under the close supervision of a Clinical Pastoral Educator, the student participates in patient care as relates to individuals' religious / spiritual experience. The student is committed to respecting the dignity, faith tradition, culture and/or philosophical world view of each individual and family.

Responsibilities:

• The CPE Student/Chaplain Extern attends to the assignments, direction and correction of the ACPE Certified Educator. Provides spiritual care to all patients, residents, families, hospital staff, physicians, volunteers, and other individuals in assigned clinical areas, consistent with the values of the Penn Medicine.

• The CPE Student/Chaplain Extern will function as a member of a multidisciplinary team caring for patients, residents, individuals, families and staff in an assigned clinical area, working cooperatively with Staff Chaplains, Level I/II CPE Students and Supervisory Education Students.

• Attend and participate in all scheduled CPE training sessions, e.g.; seminars, didactics, supervisory conferences. Deliver written work in a timely manner.

• Take responsibility for personal learning; using the CPE methodology to further growth in professional, personal, and theological competencies.

• Protect peer confidentiality.

• Comply with all rules, regulations, and the mission of Penn Medicine, the specific entity and the CPE program.

• Understand the spiritual needs of patient/resident/family/individual care in the assigned entity.

• Work in close collaboration with the members of the Department of Pastoral Care in delivering spiritual care to patients, residents, families, individuals, and staff in accordance with the mission of Penn Medicine

• Participate in staff meetings when requested.

• Provide timely communication of pertinent patient information to the responsible chaplain.

• Participate in regular supervision.

• Be timely, consistent, and on site for the required number of clinical hours.

• Adhere to all entity specific policies regarding environmental safety, infection control, emergency management and documentation.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science in Theology, Philosophy, or Theological Education (Required)
