Carnegie Mellon University Postdoctoral Research Associate in Experimental Neutrino Physics in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Reference #: 150102 Carnegie Mellon University: Mellon College of Science: Physics

Location Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA Open Date Jul 18, 2024

Description

The Parno group in experimental neutrino physics at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a postdoctoral research position, to begin in late 2024 or early 2025. Our research program includes work on the COHERENT neutrino-scattering experiment and on direct kinematic measurements of neutrino mass, especially via the KATRIN experiment. The successful applicant will be expected to make significant contributions to a new heavy-water Cherenkov detector to benchmark the flux of neutrinos for the COHERENT experiment, and to data-taking and analysis for KATRIN, with possible additional work on other efforts related to direct neutrino-mass experiments. In addition to their own research work, the successful applicant will work with and guide graduate and undergraduate students working on both experiments. The position is expected to be based primarily in Pittsburgh, with travel to the experimental sites in Oak Ridge, Tennessee (COHERENT) and Karlsruhe, Germany (KATRIN). Other research activities in the department include rich programs in cosmology, medium- and high-energy physics, and artificial intelligence. The initial appointment is for one year, renewable up to two times (for a total of three years) upon satisfactory progress. Our diverse group is welcoming to all candidates and we seek new members who can support and enhance this diversity and grow our physics program.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a PhD in experimental nuclear or particle physics, or equivalent postdoctoral experience, by the time the position starts. Experience in data analysis and C  /python programming is crucial; experience in simulations and detector hardware are highly desirable. The successful candidate will be able to effectively interact and work with members of the KATRIN and COHERENT collaborations, on- and off-site; take on a leadership role in our efforts; and present scientific results at conferences and in papers.

Application Instructions

Applications, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae and statement of research interests, should be submitted through this Interfolio site. Candidates should also arrange to have at least three letters of recommendation uploaded to Interfolio. Application materials should be received by September 15, 2024, to ensure full consideration. Please contact Professor Diana Parno at dparno@cmu.edu with any questions. The group website may be found at http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/dianap/
