Who we’re looking for

Toyota’s Data Analytics and Data Science team is looking for a passionate and highly-motivated Senior Director – Data Engineering to lead one or more Data Engineering portfolios consisting of several data and data engineering products including Master Data Management (MDM) functions.

The Senior Director will be responsible for overseeing the strategic direction, implementation, and management of our MDM efforts including but not limited to Customer, Vehicle, Manufacturing and Supply Chain domains. This role requires a strong background in data engineering, data management, data analytics, and managing data integration. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leading cross-functional teams and driving data engineering and quality improvements. The candidate requires a strong understanding of data integration, data governance and MDM to ensure that master data is effectively managed, maintained and leveraged to support business objectives.

Reporting to the Group Manager, the person in this role will support the Data Analytics and Data Science objective to lead data engineering products and initiatives that include improving quality and accuracy of data for all data domains while improving the time to data.

What you’ll be doing

Leadership and Team management

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of data engineers, ensuring their professional development and high performance.

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute the Data Engineering strategies aligned with business objectives.

  • Team Management: Lead and mentor a team of data professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.

  • Project Management: Manage projects from inception to completion, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to budget.

  • Funding and Budgeting: Manage funding and budgeting for Data Engineering initiatives, ensuring optimal allocation of resources and financial oversight.

  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices in MDM.

  • Data Analytics: Utilize data analytics to derive actionable insights and support decision-making processes.

Data Integration and Quality

  • Data Ingress/Egress Management: Oversee the secure and efficient transfer of data across systems and platforms.

  • Oversee the integration of master data across systems, ensuring data flows consistently between business applications, databases, and reporting tools.

  • Implement processes and technology solutions to improve data quality, accuracy, and completeness.

Innovation and Technology Management

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable data architectures to support data-driven business processes and analytics.

  • Evaluate and integrate new technologies, tools, and frameworks to continuously improve the data engineering ecosystem.

  • Manage Data tools and platforms, ensuring their optimal use and alignment with organizational needs

  • Evaluate and recommend new Data Engineering technologies and solutions to improve data management efficiency

  • Work with IT and development teams to design, implement, and optimize MDM solutions and processes.

Stakeholder Management and Partnerships

  • Act as the primary point of contact for Data inquiries, projects, and initiatives.

  • Build strong relationships with business stakeholders (e.g., marketing, sales, finance, supply chain) to understand data needs and requirements.

  • Communicate the value of Data Engineering initiatives to senior leadership and ensure alignment with broader business strategies.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with business units, IT, and other stakeholders to understand data needs and deliver solutions.

Data Strategy and Governance:

  • Data Governance: Establish and enforce data governance policies and standards to ensure data quality and compliance

  • Define, implement, and maintain data policies, standards, and best practices for managing critical business data (e.g., customer, product, supplier, etc.).

  • Drive the development and implementation of roadmaps and programs to support business objectives.

  • Ensure data is accurate, consistent, and compliant with internal and external regulations.

What you bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 15+ years of experience in data management, data analytics, MDM, and Agile with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in MDM tools and technologies, data analytics platforms, and data governance frameworks.

  • Familiarity with Cloud Technologies and Platforms (AWS Experience Preferred).

  • Experience with data storage technologies like relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL), NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra), and data lakes.

  • Proficiency with data engineering tools and technologies such as SQL, Python, Spark, Airflow.

  • Familiarity with data governance, security, and privacy standards.

Leadership Skills

  • Demonstrative ability to drive results, manage change and adapt to evolving business needs.

  • Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate others.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities with a keen attention to detail.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage with stakeholders at all levels.

  • Proven experience in managing funding and budgeting for large-scale projects.

Added bonus if you have

  • Master's degree is preferred.

  • Relevant certifications in MDM, data management, or data analytics are a plus.

  • AWS / Cloud Certifications.

  • Experienced in working in an Agile environment with SAFe.

  • Experienced with Reltio or other Master Data Platforms.
