This announcement will be used to fill Transportation Technician Apprentice positions in District 5, Pocatello.

The Transportation Technician Apprentice is a 3-5 year horizontal career path. Through on the job training, classroom training, achievement of team goals and agency goals, there will be opportunity to progress through a 3 Step program. After successful completion of each step, wages may increase as outlined below:

  • Starting wage: $18.55 - $19.05

  • Completion of Step One: $19.98

  • Completion of Step Two: $21.64

  • Completion of Step Three: $23.33

This position requires that you obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 60 days of hire as well as pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing. ITD will provide training to meet the Entry Level Driver Training requirements as well as licensing costs.

Summary:

To perform entry-level technical highway maintenance and engineering work; perform related work as required.

Responsibilities:

  • These positions operate equipment and use a variety of tools to maintain roadways.

  • The incumbents remove snow and ice, patch and seal surfaces, control roadside vegetation, repair and replace guardrail and fences, make minor repairs to bridges and related structures.

  • The incumbents perform preventive maintenance on equipment.

  • Incumbents work on survey crews in a variety of positions.

  • They use standard survey equipment for surveys such as preliminary alignments, slope-staking, cross-sectioning, right-of-way and grade control.

  • The incumbents conduct routine inspections of construction and maintenance projects.

  • They sample highway materials and conduct basic field tests to determine conformance to plans and specifications. Incumbents inspect trucks to determine legal weights and record the materials hauled.

  • They use, clean, repair and calibrate a variety of field testing equipment.

  • These positions sample soils, highway materials, and other materials.

  • The incumbents conduct routine material tests, calculate, record, and check the test results.

  • They clean, repair, and calibrate a variety of laboratory testing equipment.

  • These positions use highway plans, specifications, and maps.

  • They perform algebraic, geometric and trigonometric calculations.

  • The incumbents code data for computer input.

  • They write legible reports and records.

  • They communicate with co-workers and the public on a frequent basis.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid driver's license

  • Experience operating vehicles with manual transmissions

MQ Specialties: Some positions require a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with one or more of the following endorsements: air brake, hazardous materials, or tanker.

Essential Function:

An essential function of this position is driving an ITD vehicle. Incumbents are required to successfully pass a driving record check to be considered for this position.

Minimum Standards:

Within the last three (3) years:

  • Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident

  • Four (4) moving violations

  • Failure to submit to a chemical test

Within the last two (2) years:

  • Three (3) moving violations

Within the last twelve (12) months:

  • Accumulation of six (6) points

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs

  • Two (2) moving violations

ALCOHOL AND CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES TESTING PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is required to implement an Alcohol and Controlled Substance Program to comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR), Part 382. If you are selected for this position you must undergo a controlled substance test including:

  • Random

  • Reasonable suspicion

  • Post-accident

  • Follow-up

  • Return to duty

Please note: Employees are responsible to understand and comply with the Idaho Transportation Department's drug and alcohol procedures. A refusal to submit to the above testing requirements will result in ineligibility for the position due to the inability to perform the Commercial Motor Vehicle driving functions required. A copy of the requirements can be obtained at ITD's Headquarters Human Resource Office or the nearest ITD District Office.
