Position Purpose :

The registered nurse is a collaborative member/leader of the care team and is accountable for practicing both the art and science of nursing, delivering care as prescribed by the American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. In addition, registered nurses are accountable to practice in accordance with the standards established/endorsed by St Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) leadership and by external regulators and accreditation agencies.  The registered nurse actively promotes SJMO nursing and the nursing profession and supports advancing practice in fulfillment of the SJMO Quality Plan for Nursing.  Registered nurses at SJMO have authority, responsibility and accountability for nursing practice through the formal nursing shared governance structure and are expected to abide by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.

Education:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Licensure / Certification:

Active license to practice nursing in the State of Michigan. Certification by a nationally recognized nursing organization is preferred. Membership in a professional nursing organization is preferred. BCLS for all inpatient bedside care areas, and inpatient and outpatient surgical services required within 45 days from date of hire or transfer. ACLS for specified care areas as follows:  AICU, CCU, PACU, cath lab, ambulatory surgery, emergency department, radiology/special procedures required within 6 months from date of hire or transfer. TNCC for specified care areas as follows: emergency department, clinical decision unit and critical care NRP required within 12 months from date of hire or transfer. NRP for specified care areas as follows: labor and delivery, neonatal intensive care required within 12 months

from date of hire or transfer. Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification (EFM-c) is required for specified areas as follows: Labor and Delivery, Antenatal, and Maternal-Fetal Medicine, required within the first 12 months from date of hire or transfer.

NIH Stroke Scale for specified care areas such as follows: AICU, CCU, emergency department, critical care NRP, and neuroscience required within 6 months of date of hire or transfer. FIM credentialing for specified care areas such as follows: inpatient rehabilitation required within 6 months of hire or transfer.

Experience: Two years' experience in a health care related field preferred.

Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.

Duties / Responsibilities:

1     Provides patient care that reflects respect for patients' rights, dignity, values, culture preferences, and expressed needs and attention to providing comfort, relieving pain, and alleviating anxiety.

2     Demonstrates principles of Relationship-based Care to cultivate and maintain therapeutic relationships as a means to optimal healing and collegial functioning as interdisciplinary care team members.

3     Utilizes research and evidence-based practice in the delivery of care, to advance nursing practice, and to improve nurse and patient satisfaction, and quality of care.

4     Implements care in accordance with the multi-disciplinary plan of care collaborating with and delegating appropriately to other care team members as needed.

6     Uses data and evidence to drive decisions at point of care that improve and optimize care delivery, clinical outcomes, and patient and nurse satisfaction.

Supports and conducts oneself in a manner consistent with customer service expectations.  In accordance with unit or departmental practice, determines that appropriate charges have been entered for the correct patient, encounter, date/time of service, with any required modifiers.  Make corrections as needed per charge capture policy/practice. In accordance with unit or departmental practice, actively participates in on-going education and communication regarding revenue management. In accordance with unit or departmental practice, assists with tracking and monitoring of equipment assigned to the unit.  Requests services for maintaining equipment as needed. In accordance with unit or departmental practice, proficient with electronic health records for documentation, assessment, and care management, performing these activities concurrently with provision of care throughout the shift.

Dept/Unit Specific:

•     Develops a multi-disciplinary plan of care ensuring achievement of quality outcomes and use of resources.

•     Recognizes and promotes the unique contributions of all care team members providing clinical resource support.

•     Supports organizational and unit strategic goals, programs and activities, and actively participates in unit- based Shared Governance Council initiatives activities.

•     Evaluates own performance utilizing input from all care team members and customers and develops a plan for continual improvement.

•     Evaluates patient/family outcomes and progress toward goals as reflected in the plan of care.

•     Demonstrates successful completion of unit-specific competencies.

Working Conditions:

•     In a typical day, the associate may sit for 25%, stand for 25%, and walk for 50% of the day.

•     Associate's position requires occasional (5-10% of work time) squatting, crawling, crouching, kneeling, and balancing, frequent bending/stooping, and reaching above shoulder level, pushing/pulling.

•     Position requires the use of hands for simple and firm grasping and fine manipulating.

•     Position may require frequent lifting and carrying of patients/equipment/other not to exceed 51 pounds.

Associates will not lift items/patients exceeding 35 pounds from the floor.

•     May be exposed to marked changes in temperature and humidity, infectious diseases, hazardous waste, and chemicals.

•     Position requires a high level of mental concentration to attain established deadlines. Working environment includes frequent interruptions.
