JOB PURPOSE

The Cloud Platform Services (CPS) team, part of the UniOps function, has a vision to accelerate cloud adoption to drive a future fit model for innovation and growth across Unilever.

The core mission of a Cloud Engineer is to deliver technical solutions using cutting edge technologies and industry best practices to implement product solutions for CPS’s customers. The Cloud Engineer promotes the use of automation to solve technical challenges, and strives to create elegant, reliable, performant and cost-effective solutions as part of the product lifecycle.

The primary focus of a Cloud Engineer is the automated deployment & configuration of cloud infrastructure and services and the tools used to build these services.

The Cloud Engineer is experienced in cloud-based technology, with a firm grasp of emerging technologies, platforms, and applications, and the ability to customise them to help Unilever become more secure and efficient. Extensive knowledge of cloud maintenance and advanced industry knowledge is key to keeping CPS on the cutting edge.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • You will be expected to work alongside the CPS Product team to identify and implement the most optimal cloud-based solutions for our customers.

  • You will be responsible for building and configuring via automated deployment, products and services for CPS’ customers via the Cloud Service Catalogue (CSC).

  • You will need to define and document best practices and strategies regarding product and application build, deployment, and maintenance.

  • It will be expected of you to provide guidance, thought leadership, and mentorship to development teams on how to build cloud competencies.

  • As part of the Cloud Engineering role you will need to ensure application performance, uptime, and scale, maintaining high standards of code quality and thoughtful design.

  • You will be accountable for developing and implementing technical efforts to design, build, and deploy Azure and GCP applications at the direction of Cloud Architects, including large-scale data processing, AI and ML.

  • Participate in all aspects of the product development life cycle for Azure and GCP solutions, including planning, requirements, development, testing, and quality assurance.

  • You will be expected to troubleshoot incidents, identify root cause, fix and document problems, and implement preventive measures, in accordance to agreed Product SLA’s and KPI’s.

  • As a cloud technical subject matter expert you will need to educate teams on the implementation of new cloud-based initiatives, providing associated training as required.

  • Employ exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to see and solve issues before they affect business productivity.

Skills

Programming / software development:

  • Designs, codes, verifies, tests, documents, amends and refactors moderately complex programmes or scripts.

  • Applies agreed standards and tools, to achieve a well-engineered result.

  • Collaborates in reviews of work with others as appropriate.

Testing

  • Reviews requirements and specifications and defines test conditions.

  • Designs test cases and test scripts under own direction, mapping back to pre-determined criteria, recording and reporting outcomes.

  • Analyses and reports test activities and results. Identifies and reports issues and risks associated with own work.

Systems Installation/ Decommissioning

  • Installs or removes hardware and/or software, using supplied installation instructions and tools.

  • Conducts tests, corrects malfunctions, and documents results in accordance with agreed procedures.

  • Reports details of all hardware/software items that have been installed and removed so that configuration management records can be updated.

  • Provides assistance to users in a professional manner following agreed procedures for further help or escalation.

  • Maintains accurate records of user requests, contact details and outcomes.

  • Contributes to the development of installation procedures and standards.

Change Management

  • Develops, documents, reviews and implements changes based on requests for change.

  • Applies change control procedures.

Release and Deployment

  • Uses the tools and techniques for specific areas of release and deployment activities.

  • Administers the recording of activities, logging results and documents technical activity.

  • May carry out early life support activities such as providing support advice to initial users.

Information Security

  • Communicates information security risks and issues to business managers and others.

  • Performs basic risk assessments for small information systems.

  • Contributes to vulnerability assessments.

  • Applies and maintains specific security controls as required by organisational policy and local risk assessments.

  • Investigates suspected attacks.

  • Responds to security breaches in line with security policy and records the incidents and action taken.

Methods and Tools

  • Provides support on the use of existing methods and tools.

  • Configures methods and tools within a known context.

  • Creates and updates the documentation of methods and tools.

Experience

  • Relevant years of experience, developing, and implementing cloud solutions on Azure and GCP platforms.

  • Relevant years of experience in coding with Java, PHP, Python or any other industry recognised coding language.

  • Proven experience in using code repository and deployment tools such as Teraform, Morpheus, Cloudbolt.

  • Understanding of and experience with well-architected frameworks.

  • Proven ability to collaborative with multi-disciplinary teams of Product Managers, Architects, Scrum Masters and Subject Matter Experts.

  • Keeping ahead with cloud trends and aligning appropriate cloud-native solutions to a product strategy.

  • Practical experience in applying Agile and DevOps methodologies.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 2+ Associate level CSP certificates in GCP and/or Azure.

    Cyber criminals advertise fake job adverts with prestigious employers as a way of stealing information or even defrauding individuals out of money. In the most sophisticated cases, they will set up fake websites, which have a similar address to companies like Unilever. They even conduct fake telephone interviews and then offer candidates a role with the proviso they pay a fee for background checks or to cover work visa costs.  These types of attacks are becoming more common as more people are looking for employment in the economic climate.
