University of Maine System Part-Time Faculty - School of Nursing, Spring 2025 in Portland, Maine

The University of Southern Maine’s School of Nursing is seeking applications for anticipated Part-Time Faculty positions for the Spring 2025 semester. These positions involve teaching clinical nursing to pre-licensure students enrolled in our baccalaureate nursing program. The exact meeting dates, times, and course durations may vary depending on the lab, lecture, or clinical section. The Spring 2025 semester runs from Tuesday, January 21 through Friday, May 9, 2025.

There will also be required training and orientation sessions before the start of the semester, specific to the course(s) the selected individual will be teaching.

School of Nursing (https://usm.maine.edu/school-nursing/) has a comprehensive mentorship program. Each course is led by a Course Lead Faculty, who serves as the subject matter expert, mentors part-time faculty, and ensures consistency in course structure, syllabus design, and content delivery across sections.

Faculty responsibilities include orienting, teaching, supervising, grading, and evaluating pre-licensure nursing students. Clinical sections will have up to 8 students per clinical depending on location, lab/simulation sections may have 12-16 students per lab, and lectures typically have 30-35 students per section.

These roles offer an excellent opportunity for nursing professionals to contribute to the development of future nurses while benefiting from a supportive teaching environment.

Teaching opportunities could involve any of the following lab, lecture, or clinical courses, depending on the School of Nursing's needs and the applicant's skill set, experience, interest, and availability.

We are seeking instructors for the following courses:

  • Introduction to Professional Nursing, Leadership and Ethics (NUR 270): 3 credit lecture, meeting once per week, Portland campus

  • Health Assessment Lab (NUR 301): 1 credit, 2 hours per week for 14 weeks, Portland campus

  • Nursing Fundamentals Lab (NUR 307): 2 credits, 4 hours per week for 14 weeks, Portland campus

  • Intermediate Nursing Skills/Simulation Lab (Med/Surg) (NUR 313): 1 credit, 4 hours per week for the last 7 weeks of the semester, Portland campus, team-taught with 2 faculty members per lab section

  • Nursing Skills/Simulation Lab (NUR 417): 0.5 credits, 2 hours per week for meeting every other week (7 total meetings), multiple sections are available on Tuesdays

  • Reproductive and Sexual Health Nursing Skills/Simulation Lab (NUR 418): 0.5 credits, 2 hours per week for meeting every other week (7 total meetings), multiple sections are available on Tuesdays

  • Junior Adult Health I Clinical (NUR 325): 4 credits, one day per week for 14 weeks. Clinical sites may include MMC, SMHC, CMMC, Mid Coast, Mercy, Maine General, or St. Mary’s.

  • Mental Health Nursing Clinical (NUR 331): 2 credits, one day per week for 7 weeks, clinical sites may include Spring Harbor, SMHC, St. Mary’s, or Maine General.

  • Reproductive and Sexual Health Nursing Clinical (NUR 422): 2 credits, one day per week for 7 weeks, clinical sites may include MMC, SMHC, CMMC, Mid Coast, or Mercy.

  • Pediatric Nursing Lecture (NUR 427): 3 credits, meets once per week for 14 weeks (Portland or Lewiston campus).

  • Child Health Nursing Clinical (NUR 428): 2 credits, one day per week for 7 weeks, typically at MMC but other options may be possible.

  • Senior Adult Health II Clinical (NUR 425): 2 credits, one day per week for the first 7 weeks, clinical sites may include MMC, SMHC, CMMC, Mid Coast, Mercy, or St. Mary’s.

    Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior teaching experience. In addition, USM employees can use their USM Card to access the library, Cigna Employee Assistance Plan, and fitness center(s). USM also offers part-time faculty the opportunity for development frequently through our Center for Collaboration and Development (CCD) and the chance to get an online teaching certification and training through CTEL, in addition to other developmental opportunities open to all staff throughout the year.

    Required Qualifications:

  • BSN or BS in Nursing from an accredited program

  • Current active Maine RN license or relevant nursing compact license

  • Able to meet employment criteria including background check, immunizations, BLS/CPR certification, and current TB for clinical teaching.

  • Expertise in entry-level nursing skills, and recent practice in clinical nursing.
