Spectrum Healthcare Partners Registered Nurse - OR in Portland, Maine

Spectrum provides services at many of Maine’s hospitals throughout the state and in eastern New Hampshire.

POSITION SUMMARY

Position facilitates optimal patient care by providing competent and skilled nursing services to surgeons and patients in the Orthopaedic Surgery Center.  4 day, 36-hours per week.  6:30 AM - 4:00 PM.  Benefit eligible.  No nights, weekends, call.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Works with all members of the health care team to provide optimal care to the patient establishing an environment of safety for the surgical patient

  • Assesses, implements, and evaluates treatments and procedures that contribute to the physiological stability for the surgical patient

  • Demonstrates knowledge regarding the psychological, sociologic, and spiritual responses of patients and their families to the operative or other procedure

  • Ensure that all physician orders are carried out appropriately and timely

  • Confirm that proper supplies and equipment are available in the OR and for the procedure

  • Assists and passes medical instrument or other objects to surgeon as needed during operation

  • Adheres to safety standards and precautions

  • Obtains concurrent vital signs to detect deviations from expected normal values and assesses condition

  • Supports patient rights and ethics by delivering consistent, competent, and ethical care within legal standards of practice, while maintaining privacy and support of the patient’s value system

  • Consistently communicates effectively and respectfully with the patient to assure they understand all procedures and feel as comfortable as possible

  • Maintains consistent and accurate patient care documentation

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Consistently performs hand hygiene practices for the prevention of infection

  • Assume duties within or out of the sterile field as assigned

  • Demonstrates professionalism at all times

  • Responsible for maintaining licensure and relevant certifications; ongoing personal and professional growth and development

  • Keeps abreast of current issues involving patient care or practice issues by attending and participating in department, team and practice meetings

  • Displays cooperative behavior and interacts positively and effectively with others to promote a team environment

  • Performs other duties necessary to maintain the overall efficiency and continuity of the surgery center

  • Is proactive in identifying, reporting and participating in the resolution of any potential or actual patient safety issues

    QUALIFICATIONS

  • Registered Nurse degree from an accredited school of nursing

  • Active State of Maine Nursing license or eligible for licensure

  • Broad knowledge of nursing in an ambulatory surgery center setting with emphasis on surgical risk factors, patient pre-intra-and post-operative learning needs

  • Previous experience as a Registered Nurse in a surgical setting

  • Scrubbing experience required

  • Orthopedic nursing experience helpful

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and CNOR certification desired

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary for interacting with patients, physicians, supervisors and other staff

  • Skill in time management, prioritizing and medical care coordination

  • Ability to organize and accomplish tasks, and have the flexibility to meet changing demands on daily basis

  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Ability to project and maintain a professional image

  • Ability to work independently and excel as part of a team

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Proficient computer skills with knowledge of electronic medical records

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Daily use of computer operating instruments; stationary PC, Laptop PC, keyboard and mouse

  • Light lifting of paperwork, folders or other general record keeping materials

  • Operation of various office equipment: fax machine, telephone & voice mail system, stationary/lap top computer, e-mail system, scanner, and copier

  • Assist with lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds frequently

  • Assist with transfer of patients, pull patients up in bed, perform CPR

  • Occasionally move patients in stretchers independently

  • Walks frequently

  • May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time

  • Risk of exposure to hazardous conditions and blood borne pathogens

  • Frequent reaching with hands/arms

  • Frequent bending, pulling
