The Position

About this position:

Portland Parks & Recreation, City Nature, maintains, restores and enhances over 8,000 acres of natural areas throughout the City of Portland. Additionally, this group is responsible for the building, maintenance, monitoring, and improvement of more than 120 miles of soft surface trails. Botanic Technicians perform natural resource restoration and trail work as assigned. Individuals in these positions will need to effectively navigate and work in remote areas, including off trail in areas of uneven terrain and in extreme weather .

The current vacancy for Botanic Technician exists in the City Nature Soft Surface Trails Team , we are looking for a candidate who can specialize in trail project work. We are anticipating future hiring from this recruitment to fill current vacancies in City Nature Natural Areas with a natural area maintenance focus.

As a Botanic Technician I , you will:

  • Be a part of a highly skilled team of trail and natural resource professionals.

  • Perform soft surface trail construction and maintenance, utilizing hand tools and power tools.

  • Analyze trail conditions, grade and reroute soft surface trails.

  • Remove non-native vegetation with hand and power landscaping equipment and herbicides, plant native plants in natural area loca tions.

  • Apply knowledge of botany, horticulture and/or natural resources to assignments.

  • Work outdoors, typically 75% of your work would be spent in the field doing trail maintenance.

  • Participate in routine trail maintenance activities like brushing, leaf removal, and tread and drainage improvements.

  • Utilize equipment such as dump trucks and power wheelbarrows to mobilize materials to repair sites.

  • Assist other B otanic T echnicians with downed tree removal utilizing a chainsaw.

  • Contribute to small construction projects of rock walls, crib walls, and other trail infrastructure.

  • Inventory, repair, and replace trail signage.

  • Collaborate with external and internal stakeholders to implement trail maintenance projects.

  • Occasionally work with volunteers to implement trail-based stewardship activities.

To Qualify

Applicants must specifically address and demonstrate in their responses to the supplemental questions and their résumé how their education, training, work experience, and/or lived experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and experience in natural area restoration, vegetation management, trail maintenance, and basic park and facilities maintenance.

  • Experience with common and uncommon hand tools, small power equipment, for example, mowers, spray equipment, chainsaw, mini skid-steers, and power wheelbarrows.

  • Experience operating vehicles in natural areas, parks, and roadways (i.e. utility vehicles, small trucks, tractors, and other vehicles).

  • Experience operating a personal computer and using word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.

  • Ability and experience providing onsite direction to volunteer workers possessing a wide variety of skills .

  • Ability and experience working constructively in a diverse team environment.

    Applicants must also possess:

  • A valid state driver’s license and an acceptable driving record is needed for driving City v ehicles.

  • Pass a Physical Capacity Test (PCT) administered after the job offer is made.
