Position Description

Primary purpose:

  • The Operations Supervisor (Marine Superintendent) will be accountable to supervise, manage, direct and coordinate the safe, environmental compliant, efficient, and productive transfer of customers’ cargo from rail cars to storage building or vessels and from storage building to vessels. The Operations Supervisor will ensure that the organized labor follow established terminal policies and procedures which protect and ensure customer cargo integrity while meeting or exceeding air, water, environmental conditions and cargo standards.

  • Pay range is $72,600 per year to $105,300 per year. This position includes a discretionary annual incentive plan. Job level and pay commensurate with experience and skill set.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Hire, supervise, direct, coach, train, and coordinate organized labor utilized to perform all work on a marine cargo handling facility. Be familiar with, comprehend, and be knowledgeable with all applicable labor agreements, documents and letters of understanding governing terminal workers. (Pacific Coast Longshore and Clerk’s Contract Document, Pacific Coast Walking Bosses & Foreman’s Agreement, Pacific Coast Marine Safety Code, and the IBEW Labor Contract).

  • Schedule, coordinate and facilitate cargo handling activities, preventive maintenance and maintenance repair activities which ensure the lowest unit costs, while meeting all applicable terminal, corporate, state, EPA, federal, marine and cargo owners regulations, rules and standards without exception.

  • Shall adhere to Corporate, Federal, and State EEO, affirmative action, fair treatment and harassment policies and regulations in all areas of responsibility taking immediate corrective action for any non-compliance.

  • Consistently maintain and demonstrate a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of company assets, employees, and the general public.

    Position Requirements

    Minimum requirements: Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

    Experience / Specific Knowledge:

  • Progressive supervisory experience and/or training specific to supervisory/management techniques.

  • Mechanical experience and safety training in heavy industry.

  • Union operations experience.

  • Safety competencies in marine and railroad environments.

Certification, licenses, registrations:

  • A satisfactory driving record as determined by the Company and a current, valid State driver's license are required.

  • Satisfactorily obtaining or already possessing a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card is a condition of employment. TWIC card is obtained by submitting an application, background check, and having fingerprints taken.

  • If the employee is subject to license or certification requirements or training as stipulated by local, state or federal agencies or the Company, now or in the future, compliance is required under this job description.

Competencies, skills, and abilities:

  • Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.

  • Well-balanced interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communications skills are required.

  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely for different types of audiences, deliver a presentation clearly and persuasively.

  • Must be accountable and take direction from Managers; keep required work schedules, which include regular and predictable job attendance; focus attention on details; follow work rules.

  • Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks are essential.

  • Must be a problem solver with the ability to find resolutions.

Physical demands:

  • Employee must be physically capable of completing and satisfying all training requirements as stipulated by local, state or federal agencies and/or Company Policy.

  • May be required to work outside in varying and sometimes extreme weather situations.

Working Conditions:

  • Position subject to a flexible work schedule; including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Individual will be required to carry a KM mobile phone and must be able and willing to respond to support projects 24/7, in case of emergencies or under special circumstances if necessary.

  • Extended work hours in cases of emergencies.

  • Must be able to work as required to meet cargo handling activities and work periods of consecutive days without time off as the schedule requires.

  • May be required to work alone (unsupervised).

  • Extended periods of sitting may be required for administrative activities.

Supervisory responsibility:

  • Supervise ILWU workforce.

  • Oversee & supervise vendors & on-sight contractors as needed.

Preferred education, experience, certifications, competencies, skills, and abilities:

Above the minimum requirement; not required but advantageous in this position:

  • College or Trade School training in mechanical or engineering disciplines, or equivalent professional experience preferred.

  • Mechanical or electrical training desired.

  • Prior experience requiring mechanical aptitude and skill is a plus.

  • Knowledge of rail traffic coordinating processes.

  • Rail road equipment and bulk cargo handling operational experience.

  • Heavy Industrial experience having concurrent Safety, Quality and Environmental responsibilities.
