Princeton University invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Director of Admission. We seek a candidate with proven ability to review and make recommendations on first year and transfer applicants from a pool of highly qualified students. Reporting to an Associate Dean of Admission, the Assistant Director is responsible for articulating the mission of Princeton University and conveying its policies and procedures to applicants, parents, guidance counselors, alumni and University personnel; making group presentations at high schools and college nights, as well as conducting information sessions on campus. The assistant director will serve as part of a strategic team (Communications, Diversity Outreach, International and Military Outreach, Strategic Planning) and be responsible for managing projects as part of that team.

Responsibilities

Applications: Reading, evaluating, and summarizing applications for admission. The Assistant Director is actively involved in the selection of the incoming freshmen class, and assisting with the transition from high school to college.

Travel: The assistant director is directly responsible for the management of an admissions territory. Position requires approximately 4-5 weeks of travel, primarily in the fall. Involves additional time commitment (including weekends and extended hours) for at least four months of the year.

Presentations: Making public presentations about Princeton University's undergraduate academic and extracurricular programs and resources, and admission and financial aid policies and procedures to a variety of audiences (both on and off campus): e.g. to secondary school students and counselors, parents, and Princeton's Alumni Schools Committees.

Travel: planning, scheduling and implementing four to five weeks of travel a year to visit secondary schools. Attend college nights, and coordinate regional evening programs, followed by submission of written reports.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Essential

  • * Ability to be comfortable with complexity and ambiguity, advise senior staff and carry out a plan of action
  • * Must be able to relate positively to a variety of interests, backgrounds and points of view by using tact, diplomacy and discretion
  • * Excellent writing and speaking skills
  • * Ability to exercise good judgment while working collegially in a high pressure, deadline-driven environment
  • * Exercise good judgment in a variety of challenging conditions
  • * Resourcefulness, initiative and motivation

Preferred

  • * Minimum three of experience in selective college admission
  • * Experience reading a large volume of applications and making recommendations regarding their candidacy
  • * Familiarity with and a willingness to learn technology and data driven systems
  • * Willingness to learn and accept constructive feedback
