Job Description The Locomotive Mechanic Inspects, maintains, and repairs locomotive mechanical, electrical and diesel engine systems in accordance with FRA regulations on FRA and customer owned locomotives at the Transportation Technology Center (TTC).

Performs mechanical inspection on locomotives and repairs defects to conform to FRA regulations.

Tests locomotives for performance by use of load box.

Replaces brake shoes on locomotives.

Disassembles and rebuilds locomotive trucks and replaces wheel sets and traction motors.

Repairs and rebuilds diesel engines, air compressors, and many other locomotive components.

Disassembles and reassembles locomotives and machinery.

Perform emergency repairs and have a basic understanding of electrical theory, AC and DC motors, control circuits, and electrical schematics.

Comply with the guidelines set forth by the FRA on Personal Blue Signal Protection of Workers.

Be proficient and knowledgeable on the interchange rules as they pertain to locomotives.

Must possess the ability to complete written forms and reports as well as necessary Federal Railroad Administration reports pertaining to locomotive maintenance.

Performs other duties as required. Accountable for compliance of all safety and operating rules, policies and guidelines.

Working hours: Monday - Thursday 7:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Friday 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM

TTC has a 9/80 work schedule consisting of a total of eight nine-hour days, one eight-hour day, and one day off spread over a two-workweek timeframe. Employees work 80 hours over nine days rather than the usual 10 days, allowing for every other Friday to be an off from work Friday.

Qualifications Required (Skills)

Five or more years of experience as a locomotive mechanic (machinist) or locomotive electrician or Bachelors degree or equivalent with two years of relevant experience. Must have a working knowledge of and be familiar with various types of tools and equipment such as, but not limited to, welders, torches, hammers, jacks, and various types of other mechanical, pneumatic, and hand tools pertaining to the construction and maintenance of locomotives. * Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at a time. * Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. * Detail oriented. * Strong organizational, follow through and time management skills. * Valid driver's...
