Intern – Industrial 3D Printing. Additive Manufacturing

POSITION PROFILE

The Additive Manufacturing (AM) Intern – Industrial 3D Printing is a temporary position over the course of either a full-year co-op program (approximately 42 weeks) or on a semester basis while in school (approximately 12 – 16 weeks) with the Ricoh Managed 3D Printing Services team. The internship offers students the opportunity to learn and develop Project, Process, and Design skills. Interns will be exposed to engineering services, AM production, and quality control processes in a functioning business environment in which Ricoh supports additive manufacturing at our customers’ locations. They will also be exposed to customer innovation projects involving DfAM concepts, machine/material validation, and more. Must be a North Carolina State University Student.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Interns will be presented opportunities to gain skills in the following:

• Supply chain optimization, supply chain characterization, supply chain data analysis, and supply chain data reporting.

• Short-run manufacturing principles, bridge manufacturing requirements, the use of AM in stressed supply chains, on-shoring of end use part production.

• 3D printing preparation software including orientation, support generation, nesting, and tool paths.

• Design aspects associated with part functionality, manufacturability, and appearance.

• Appropriateness of 3D printing technology to end-use applications.

• Provide production support to AM operation team such as post-processing and finishing 3D prints.

• 3D scanning and quality measures.

• Customer support for AM related issues.

Interns will be expected to participate in:

• University research conversations

• AM Industry partner conversations

• 3rd party software development conversations

• Internal Ricoh customer conversations

• File fixing

• Machine programming

• Production support

• Root cause analysis

• 3D scanning

• Conducting themselves professionally.

• Completing all training assigned by Ricoh corporate and the Ricoh 3D team.

Special projects may include but are not limited to:

• Training model/simulators

• Exploring new product development techniques

• New product designs

• Internal Ricoh Company Limited confidential R&D

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, and Certifications)

• Undergraduate or Graduate Student Currently Enrolled at North Carolina State University in Industrial Design or Mechanical Engineering

• Coursework with CAD is preferred.

• Coursework with 3D printing is strongly preferred.

• Coursework in a laboratory where chemicals are handled is preferred.

• Familiarity with any major programming language helpful.

• Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

• Students are to successfully complete all required screenings prior to hire

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Understanding of Industrial Design or Mechanical Engineering, Prototyping, and Modeling.

• Design knowledge of materials selection, simulation, modeling, etc.

• Verbal and written communication skills.

• Eagerness to work with a variety of 3D printing and 3D CAD technologies.

• Ability to work with a variety of post processing technologies and products such as Vapor (IPA, acetone, etc.) finishing/smoothing, support removal, general part cleanup using hand tools, familiarity w/ basic GD&T (geometric dimensioning & tolerancing) tools, vibratory/ultrasonic cleaning, and grinding/sanding.

• Strong problem-solving skills.

• Analyzes and presents any given subject in a clear, concise, and logical manner both orally and written. Interacts effectively with different audiences, developing presentation skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS, MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Work is performed in multiple types of environments including typical office and light manufacturing.

• Requires careful handling of delicate parts

• Minor physical effort is required, which may involve long periods of standing, walking or similar activities

• Requires moderate dexterity - regular application of basic skills (calculator, keyboard, etc.)
