CITY OF RALEIGH Landscaping Spray Technician in Raleigh, North Carolina

Joining our Transportation Maintenance Division will provide an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in the maintenance of critical infrastructure such as sidewalks, curb and gutter, asphalt, medians, and storm drains. As a member of our 218 person staff, you will contribute to maintenance of 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks; the upkeep of over 33,000 curb ramps; and the protection of 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes connecting more than 32,000 drainage inlets. The Transportation Landscape Maintenance Unit is responsible for maintaining medians and rights-of-way throughout the City by trimming trees, bushes, and grass, and by planting various trees and plants each season.

If you are our candidate for this job, you will have experience in construction methods and materials, basic construction safety, and be capable of leading by example and earning the respect of your coworkers. As you learn and develop in this role you will be responsible for managing the care, maintenance, and renovation of a portion of the 171 miles of right-of-way and major thoroughfares throughout the City of Raleigh; operating dump trucks to haul crews, equipment, and supplies to job sites; operating small equipment such as blowers, edgers, weed eaters, tillers, chain saws, and bed refiners for plant bed maintenance; soil testing; sod installation; monitoring irrigation systems; fertilizer applications using rotary type spreaders; spraying applications; fence line and ornamental bed herbicide applications; mulching; installation of ornamental plants and material; establishing and implementing grounds/landscape development and maintenance goals, policies, standards and procedures; ensuring adherence to all relevant regulations and guidelines; other duties may be assigned as needed. You will be required to work extended hours during emergencies and inclement weather.

Your skills and knowledge will contribute to our shared mission. Some reasonable goals for a successful equipment operator in their first year will be similar to those below:

At 3 Months:You will complete your basic Orientation and Safety Training, You will learn equipment-specific safety protocols, And if you do not already have your CDL license, you will have obtained your permit and be moving towards your license. You will also be demonstrating your knowledge of the assigned equi ment and demonstrating the ability to perform pre-operation equipment checks. Finally, you will learn to effectively communicate with team members and supervisors as well as understanding and following instructions from more experienced operators.

At 6 Months:If you do not already have your CDL license, you will have completed and obtained your CDL license with all required endorsements. You will begin to handle more complex tasks and scenarios with assigned equipment. You will respond appropriately to unexpected challenges during operations. You will increase the speed and efficiency of equipment operations. Finally, you will accurately and efficiently document the equipment, labor, and materials utilized during maintenance activities.

At 9 Months:You will have earned the respect of our current staff and be demonstrating your leadership abilities daily. You will be working seamlessly with other team members, coordinating tasks efficiently. At One Year:You will continue your own personal improvement and actively seek further training opportunities. You will be able to contribute ideas for process improvements to enhance overall efficiency. Finally, you will participate in your annual performance reviews and feedback sessions with supervisors to help set your personal development goals for the following year.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Overseeing and assisting crews
  • Vegetation management
  • Performing unskilled or semi-skilled general maintenance
  • Selecting proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks
  • Performing work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
  • Inspecting and maintaining tools and equipment by changing out worn or damaged parts, monitoring safe operational use, and/or cleaning equipment
  • Inspecting facilities and structures; identifying and documenting required repairs
  • Will be required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during leaf collection, emergencies, and inclement weather
Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience High School Diploma or GED and four years of related experience.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing/Certifications

  • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving, or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
  • May be required to obtain Tanker Endorsement
  • North Carolina Pesticide License
  • Work Zone Certification
