​​Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.​

​​The Azure Databases Service Security team is hiring a Principal Engineering Manager to lead a newly formed, multi-disciplined Purple team of 6 software and security engineers. The Azure Databases organization is responsible for SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Azure CosmosDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and all other relational Azure storage offerings. These are multi-billion dollar businesses with millions of databases deployed and exabytes of data stored. Keeping the business secure is of utmost importance to Microsoft. The Purple team will cover all aspects of application and operational security for shared control plane and backplane services and infrastructure.

Security Assurance – Performing design and threat model reviews, penetration testing, static and dynamic analysis (e.g. fuzzing), and operational security testing.

Security Infrastructure – Providing libraries and tooling to harden the control plane and backplane components from known threat vectors by making them secure by default.

Security Monitoring and Detection – Gathering signals from the machines and applications, detecting potential intrusions or anomalous behavior.

Security Incident Response – Threat analysis, impact analysis, and cross-team coordination and collaboration in the event of an incident impacting the control plane and/or backplane.

Responsibilities

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 3+ years in a direct people management role.

  • 2+ years in a security-oriented role.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • ​​Prior experience working within and across large enterprise organizations.

  • Prior experience working within or closely with offensive security, ethical hacking teams.

  • Prior experience performing security threat model reviews.

  • Prior experience performing security incident response, threat analysis, and/or impact analysis.

Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
