Microsoft Corporation Principal Prototype Engineer in Redmond, Washington

We are seeking a Principal Prototype Engineer to be a forefront of our software product development process, transforming visionary ideas into tangible prototypes. In this role, you will work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, product management, and engineering, to create innovative software designs that meet our high standards of quality and functionality.

This role requires a unique blend of creativity, technical and leadership skills. You will be accountable for effective idea explorations with real data and backend integration to demonstrate the novelty and appeal of the experience, as well as its real quality and feasibility.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with design and product management teams to define product specifications and design requirements.

  • Develop and test software prototypes to validate design concepts and ensure they meet performance and usability standards.

  • Utilize real data and backend integration to demonstrate the newness, coolness, and real quality of the experience.

  • Iterate on designs based on feedback from stakeholders and usability testing.

  • Present design concepts and prototypes to stakeholders, including senior leadership, to secure buy-in and feedback.

  • Collaborate with data scientists and backend engineers to ensure feasibility and quality of prototypes.

Qualifications

Required Qualifcations

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 2+ years of track record of leading software design projects from concept to production and understanding of software development methodologies, tools and processes.

  • 2+ years of experience with backend systems, databases, and integrating real data into prototypes.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifictions

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 8+ years of experience in software design and prototyping, preferably in a technology-driven industry.

  • Experience with user-centered design methodologies and usability testing.

  • Knowledge of cloud services and infrastructure (e.g., Azure).

  • Familiarity with agile development processes.

  • Communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate design concepts and technical information clearly.

  • Ability to work independently and innovation to push the boundaries of software design and technology.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
